In combination with other efforts, such as social distancing, face masks are a vital tool to stop the spread of Coronavirus. Also, many countries, states, and cities are mandating facial coverings in public places.
However, we know that single-use masks are creating massive amounts of waste — and there have been reports of sweatshops and forced labor being used to produce PPE — so reusable cloth masks have risen up as a viable alternative for those that are not in the healthcare industry or facing other risks. (Please consult your doctor if you think you may need medical-grade masks, though!)
Below is a list of sustainable and ethical fashion brands making eco-friendly reusable cloth face masks. It’s a challenging time economically for many brands, but if we do have to purchase reusable cloth non-medical masks, choosing to get them from a conscious brand can be a vote for the types of brands we want to see survive this time!

Made Trade’s reusable face masks are handmade responsibly in Portland, Oregon and made of recycled hemp and organic cotton. The masks feature an inner pocket for adding in a filter and are sold both individually and in packs of 3 or 6.

California-based eco-fashion label Amour Vert has patterned non-medical masks made of deadstock organic cotton fabric. Their reusable organic cotton masks are double layered and feature an inside pocket for placing a filter.

3. Baggu
Baggu has 100% organic cotton masks that come in sets of three. The brand uses quilter cotton because it has a tight weave but is still breathable. These masks come with adjustable straps and an adjustable nose wire.

Anchal Project’s masks are crafted with two layers of organic cotton. The brand’s eco-friendly non-medical masks come in two sizes: medium or large.

Zero waste brand For Days is making reusable non-medical masks from organic cotton jersey — and reusing any scraps for use in other products. (Check out this post for more on zero waste fashion.) Naturepedic is currently making double-layer GOTS-certified organic cotton face masks sewn in Ohio. The brand reports that they are producing their masks at cost, and not for a profit.

Christy Dawn is a sustainable fashion label making masks from deadstock cotton. These ones are not organic, but they are repurposed cotton. The masks come in packs of 5 and 5 additional masks are donated with each purchase.

Natasha Tonic is selling orders packs of five masks made of hemp and organic cotton with slits to insert filters. The masks are hand dyed with low impact dyes in LA and the brand is saving all the scraps from production for future use.

Arraei Collective’s non-medical masks are made with a double-layered hemp fabric and feature an insert pocket for adding a filter. The masks are being made out of recycled fabric leftovers from previous collections. Arraei Collective also has children’s and toddler-size masks.

TELAstory’s masks are supporting the employment of seamstresses in Manila, Philippines — not only for the brand but for other garment workers who are currently out of work.
