With an estimated 1 billion nonrecyclable plastic toothpaste tubes tossed in the trash each year globally, we’re in major need of some zero waste toothpaste options! And with demand for plastic-free toothpaste on the rise, there are quite a few brands offering toothpaste without plastic — whether thats in reusable glass jars, compostable packaging, or recyclable metal tins and tubes.

Two Notes on Low/Zero Waste and “Natural” Toothpastes:
1. The American Dental Association only gives its seal of approval for toothpastes that have fluoride. If you’d like an ADA-approved toothpaste that’s more on the natural side of things, check out Tom’s of Maine Simply White with Fluoride (ranks 3 on the EWG scale) and Hello’s Naturally Whitening Fluoride Toothpaste (ranks 4 on the EWG scale). These do both come in plastic tubes.
2. If you do need to choose a different type of toothpaste for your specific teeth or gum needs, don’t fret! Your journey to low waste living shouldn’t come at a cost to your health and if you need a particular type of toothpaste that’s not available in low-waste packaging, know that that’s okay! There will be some swaps you simply can’t make — it’s a journey and it’s all about doing what we can.

Zero Waste Toothpaste Tubes and Jars
1. Davids Toothpaste
This is the (near) zero waste toothpaste I personally use because it’s one of the only toothpastes that’s both EWG Verified for safe ingredients and available in low waste packaging.
What makes Davids Toothpaste tube eco-friendly? While it looks like a typical plastic package in photos, the tube is actually made of recyclable metal. You might even find this plastic-free toothpaste at your local Target.

2. Georganics Mineral-Rich Toothpaste
For another plastic-free toothpaste option, check out Georganic’s natural toothpaste that comes in a glass jar and metal lid.
The vegan toothpaste is made with non-toxic ingredients and ships in recycled content packaging as well.

3. Nelson Naturals
Life Without Plastic also has a zero waste toothpaste option. The toothpaste they carry from Nelson Naturals comes in a reusable glass jar and does not contain glycerin and SLS.

4. Uncle Harry’s Toothpaste
Another glass jar zero waste toothpaste brand, Uncle Harry’s plastic-free toothpaste is made using mineral clay and plant-based ingredients and is free from artificial sweeteners, SLS, and glycerin.

Zero Waste Toothpaste Tablets
5. Georganics Natural Toothtablets
Tablets are another zero waste toothpaste option that some may prefer. (Personally, I like paste better, but many swear by tablets, and tablets are definitely a great way to get your toothpaste without plastic packaging.)
Similar to their toothpaste Georganics’ toothtablets are vegan, free of SLS, glycerin, and arrive in a recyclable and reusable glass jar.

6. Chewtab Toothpaste Tablets
For a zero waste whitening toothpaste, check out Chewtab. These tablets are made with natural ingredients and are free of ingredients like SLS.
The first set of these toothpaste tablets arrives in a refillable glass container and you can order refills, which arrive in a compostable bag.

7. Bite Toothpaste Bits
You might recognize Bite after their viral ads promoting their more sustainable toothpaste alternatives a few years back. The brand is still going strong and now offers tablets made with Nano-Hydroxyapatite (nHAp) which has been shown to remineralize enamel and be an effective alternative to fluoride.

8. Hello Charcoal Toothpaste Tablets
Say goodbye to plastic tubes and hello to zero waste toothpaste tablets! Hello’s natural toothpaste tablets come in a reusable and recyclable metal tin and the tablets are free from artificial sweeteners and flavors, SLS, parabens, and other toxic ingredients. While these exact tablets haven’t been ranked by EWG, Hello’s other toothpaste ranks 3 (with 1 being best and 10 being the worst).

9. Unpaste Toothpaste Tablets
If you want a lightweight package of toothpaste tablets, Unpaste has a solution for you with their “tooth tabs” that come in a compostable bag made of non-GMO corn starch.
They also have an option to get zero waste toothpaste with fluoride.

10. Naked Company (UK)
There aren’t many low/zero waste toothpastes with fluoride, but Naked Company comes closer to filling that need with their Dental Crush toothpaste tablets.
While not a plastic tube, Naked Company’s packaging is also not recyclable, which is not ideal. But I know that it can be difficult to find low waste toothpaste with fluoride if you’re looking for that, so this can be an option if so.
