Whether you’ll soon be welcoming a newborn or looking for a sustainable gift for the little ones in your life, these eco-friendly baby clothes and kids clothes brands have you covered with everything from super sweet onesies and baby gowns to playtime wear and school clothing.
Why choose organic baby clothes and kids clothes?
You may notice an emphasis on organic fabrics in this post, and that is because…
Little one’s have more sensitive — and penetrable — skin.
As one study put it, “infant skin is functionally still developing” and the “impaired barrier function of newborn skin” makes a newborn “more susceptible to chemical irritation” In addition, a newborn’s skin surface area is 3 times greater than an adult’s, by volume.
Which means that if a newborn is exposed to the exact same amount of a substance as an adult, they may absorb much more of that substance. There haven’t been any studies done on the impact of fabrics on baby skin, but you may feel better about choosing organic for the littlest ones in your life.
It’s better for farmers and the planet.
It’s no secret that synthetic fabrics made from petroleum are damaging the environment, but we also have to talk about cotton. Conventional cotton — though sometimes advertised as “natural” and “eco” is actually one of the world’s most pesticide-ridden and genetically modified crops in the world. This means conventional cotton often creates hazards for farmers, ecosystems, and potentially the wearers as well.
What is GOTS-certified organic?
The GOTS certification, which standards for Global Organic Textile Standard, a globally recognized certification for organic fabrics and production practices.
This standard not only ensures that the crop (typically cotton or flax for linen) was grown organically, but also that every single step of the manufacturing process was done in an ecologically and socially responsible way.
This means things like no toxic chemicals or dyes were used and the factories were free of slave, child, or exploited labor. While no certification is perfect, including GOTS, you may feel more at ease knowing there was at least this layer of verification in the organic baby clothes and organic kids clothing you are purchasing.
