Whether you’re a makeup minimalist or a serial product collector, all your prized beauty possessions deserve to be stashed somewhere nice and organized — especially when you’re packing them for a trip. With that in mind, we tracked down 15 of the best sustainable toiletry bags (also known as washbags) for all of your adventures.

Some time along our travels, we have all endured in-transit mishaps like a broken compact, or a nail polish that exploded all over your clothes. While these mishaps have more to do with luggage handling and air pressure, the best way to minimize the mess of it all is by stashing your beauty essentials in a neat and compact toiletry bag.

Since you’re bound to invest in at least two of them (one for your toiletries or skincare), it would be wise to opt for an eco-friendly makeup bag while you’re at it.

Why Choose a Sustainable Makeup Bag?

Most makeup and travel bags are made of non-biodegradable plastics (more specifically, PVC) that are harmful to the environment. Polyvinyl chloride (commonly known as PVC) causes a lot of harm throughout its lifecycle as it’s known for releasing toxic, chlorine-based chemicals that build up in our ecosystems.

The ethical makeup pouches and sustainable toiletry bags we’ve sourced are made from all sorts of recycled, organic and biodegradable fabrics that fare a lot better than their plastic counterparts.

At the end of the day, the most important aspect is functionality — and you’ll find plenty of it with these bags or pouches that offer several convenient compartments, pockets and inserts for all your little makeup knick-knacks.

Where to Find Eco-Friendly Toiletry Bags and Makeup Bags:

Note that this guide includes affiliate links. As always, all brands meet strict criteria for sustainability and are brands that we love — and that we think you’ll love too!

1. Patagonia

Ideal for an upcoming camping trip, Patagonia is known for offering a range of sustainable hard-wearing technical gear — and its eco-friendly toiletry bag is no exception.

Made from weather-resistant, recycled polyester fabric that’s been Fair Trade Certified™ sewn, this sustainable toiletry bag comes in three different sizes that are differentiated by the volume they can carry (3, 6 and 10 liters, respectively). Toss all your essentials in these highly durable pouches and stow them away in your backpack for a carefree adventure.

Materials: Recycled polyester

2. Terra Thread

It’s hard to know where to start when it comes to Terra Thread’s range of versatile sustainable toiletry bags.

Perhaps we could praise its affordable price point? Or its generous size, that has enough room to fit all your favorite lipsticks, a sizeable eyeshadow palette or two, your brush collection, and still have room for a makeup remover and some cotton pads?

Maybe the fact that it’s available in an array of bright colors?

We’ll let you know when we decide, but in the meantime, we’re vouching for their functional makeup bags for your next trip.

Oh and we can’t forget about the eco-friendly bonus: All of their bags are made from fair trade, GOTS certified organic cotton.

Glamping is an awesome way to explore the outdoors — you get to enjoy the benefits of camping but with the amenities of a hotel. Glamping pods are a fun glamping accommodation option that provides a sustainable and comfortable way to camp. In this article, we cover what pod glamping is and where to find some of the most unique, eco-friendly glamping pods around the world.

What is a Glamping Pod?

Glamping pods are small structures usually in a dome/circular shape or A-frame. They are traditionally made from wood, but they don’t have to be.

Pods originated in the UK and have since become a popular glamping type worldwide. They offer an insulated accommodation option you can enjoy year-round, unlike tent camping.

Glamping pods allow you to enjoy the great outdoors but with a comfortable bed, private bathroom, and more security and privacy.

What Makes Pod Glamping Sustainable?

There are a few things that make glamping pods sustainable. Sustainable pods will be made from natural materials and handcrafted. They should be built in a way that protects the natural environment.

Sustainable glamping pods will also conserve natural resources. They should be energy-efficient or completely off the grid. The property should dispose of waste sustainably, such as through composting and reusing/recycling water.

If you’re trying to determine if a glamping pod is eco-friendly, make sure that the owners state what measures they take to ensure minimal impact on the natural environment.

Below, we’ve put together a list of our thirteen favorite sustainable glamping pods around the world, broken down by region.

Mexico is one of my favorite countries in the world and a popular tourist destination. This vast country has so many different things to see and do. It can be hard to decide where to go in Mexico, let alone what to pack. If you’re planning a trip, then we’ve got you covered with the ultimate sustainable packing list for Mexico.

Below you’ll find three packing lists for popular destinations throughout Mexico, broken down by region. Each packing list includes the top eco-friendly items so you can use this article as a sustainable checklist for traveling to Mexico.

Why It’s Important to Pack Sustainably When Traveling

As sustainable travelers, what we do while traveling has an impact. However, what we bring with us also matters. Packing sustainable items can help lower our carbon footprint and protect the natural environment of the places we visit.

When deciding what sustainable things to pack for Mexico, it may help to first consider where you’re going and what you’re doing. Try to pack sustainable versions of the items or clothes you’ll use the most. For example, if you’re going on a beach vacation, a sustainable swimsuit may have the most impact.

As a reminder, you don’t need an entirely eco-friendly suitcase to have a positive impact. Making small, intentional choices will go far when it comes to packing sustainably.

Southern Mexico: Sustainable Packing List for Tulum

Southern Mexico is best known for its Caribbean coastline, hot weather, dense jungles, cenotes, and archeological wonders like Chitzen-Itza. One of the most popular cities in Southern Mexico is Tulum.

Tulum is a bohemian beachy town with proximity to several ruins and historic sights. If you’re planning a trip to Tulum, it’s important to note that Tulum is hot and humid year-round and most activities involve the water. There’s also a very lively nightlife scene, so expect to see many tourists dressed up.

These are the top sustainable items to include in your packing list for Tulum:

Sustainable Swimwear

The first thing you’ll want to pack for Tulum is swimwear. After all, the main thing you’ll do in Tulum is swim in various bodies of water. Choosing sustainable swimwear made from recycled materials (or even natural fibers) helps reduce the demand for fossil fuel-based plastic fabrics.

Check out our list of affordable, sustainable swimwear brands here

Reef-Safe Sunscreen

Packing reef-safe, eco-friendly sunscreen is essential for a trip to Tulum. You’ll need sunscreen to protect yourself from the hot sun. Sustainable sunscreen is best for the oceans and cenotes you’ll enjoy. Look for a sunscreen that’s plastic-free and mineral-based.

You can find ten low waste sunscreen options here

Beach Towel

If you’re planning to visit the beach regularly, you’ll want to bring a beach towel with you. You can find our favorite sustainable beach towels here. Alternatively, check out one of the local artisan stores in the center if you want to buy something locally.

Reusable Water Bottle

A great way to reduce your plastic consumption while traveling is to pack a reusable water bottle. In Tulum, and many parts of Mexico, your accommodation may have a water filter. Restaurants will also provide drinkable water. If you bring a reusable water bottle, you can fill it as you go instead of purchasing plastic water bottles.

A fantastic option is LARQ, which will also filter your water.

Low Waste & Biodegradeable Toiletries

Another packing essential for Tulum is biodegradable and low waste toiletries. Due to the proximity of the ocean, it’s especially important to choose sustainable toiletries that won’t negatively impact the environment.

EcoRoots has a thorough selection of zero-waste toiletries like safety razors and biodegradable personal care products like shampoo, conditioner, and soap.

Central Mexico: Mexico City Packing List

Central Mexico is known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and beautiful, diverse nature. It’s also the home of Mexico’s capital, Mexico City. Mexico City is one of the most populated cities in the world and a very popular tourist destination.

When deciding what to pack for Mexico City, keep in mind that it’s rarely hot aside from April and May. Thanks to its high altitude, Mexico City has a mild climate year-round. It’s also a very trendy, exciting city with a rich food scene and nightlife. You’ll definitely want to pack stylish yet versatile layers that you can dress up or down.

These are the top eco-friendly items to include when packing for Mexico City:

Sustainable Boots

Chances are you’ll be doing a lot of walking while in Mexico City. While sneakers may be the more comfortable option, you’ll want to pack some more stylish footwear. Mexico City loves their boots, so do as the locals do, and pack your favorite pair of sustainable boots.

For a great selection of ethical boot brands, check out this list. If you want to shop local, you’re in luck. You can find a nice pair of boots at one of the locally-owned or second-hand boutiques throughout the city.

Sustainable boots for Mexico

Versatile Bag

Thanks to the number of things to do in Mexico City, and its size, you’ll most likely be out all day.

As such, an easy-to-carry, sustainable travel bag is essential. Avoid bringing bags that don’t fully close. Instead, opt for a backpack or purse that can be completely fastened so your items are secure in large crowds.

Check out Able or United by Blue for different eco-friendly bags and backpacks. Alternatively, Mexico City has an endless number of markets selling handmade purses and bags.

Sustainable Rain Coat

If you’re visiting Mexico City outside of April and May, it’s a good idea to pack a raincoat. Mexico City regularly has afternoon showers and sudden thunderstorms. A waterproof jacket will come in handy.

You can find some of our favorite eco-friendly raincoats here

Versatile Clothes

If you’re trying to decide what vacation clothes for Mexico City would be, the more versatile the better. You’ll notice a range of styles and fashions here.

Choose your favorite items that you can dress up and down but don’t be afraid to bring some of your more stylish pieces. You won’t see many people dressed casually throughout the city.

Zero Waste Lip Balm

The altitude and mountain air in Mexico City are no joke. Your skin will be the first thing to notice it. Bring a thick zero waste lip balm to keep your lips from chapping.

Northern Mexico:  Eco-Friendly Baja California Packing List

Northern Mexico is primarily a dry, desert climate with dramatic temperature changes. You’ll find excellent hiking here, rugged beaches, and popular wine country. One of the most well-known destinations in Northern Mexico is Baja California.

Baja California has easy access to gorgeous beaches, diving, hiking, and wine tasting. If you’re planning to visit Baja California, keep in mind that the days will be hot, but the nights can be cold. With a drier and windier climate, you’ll want to bring some layers. It’s a good idea to pack clothes that are suitable for the outdoors but also some nicer items for dinners or wineries.

These are the top sustainable items to include in your packing list for Baja California:

Activewear

If you’re planning on hiking, attending a yoga class, or running on the beach, activewear is a must. There are several incredible eco-friendly activewear brands to choose from. Many brands make pieces that double as swimwear.

Check out this list for some recommendations.

Moisturizing Lotion

The dry, desert climate of Baja California makes lotion an essential item. Choose a zero-waste, lotion to lessen plastic pollution in the area. Look for one that is also made from chemical-free, biodegradable ingredients to avoid harming the natural surroundings.

You may want to check out Ethique’s zero waste lotion bars which will fit perfectly in your carry-on.

I’ve been to New York City several times but have never ventured upstate to spend a weekend in the Catskills until recently!

Where is Catskill?

Catskill is a picturesque town along the Hudson River only a two-hour train away from the city. It’s nestled in the Catskill Mountains and has attracted a somewhat bohemian and artistic crowd. There are so many sustainable things to do in the Catskills that make it the perfect place for a relaxing yet eco-friendly getaway.

Whether you enjoy hiking, glamping, antiquing or tasting local food, you’ll find it in Catskill. Below, I’ve put together the best things to do in Catskills, New York including where to stay and what to eat.

Where to Stay in the Catskills:

Getaway House

Conscious Life & Style Partner

Located in the middle of the Catskill Mountains, and just 15 minutes from town, is Getaway House. This is one of the best places to stay in the Catskills if you want to enjoy the peaceful surrounding nature while still being close to the heart of things.

Getaway House has several tiny cabins, located just far enough from your neighbor to give you total privacy. The Catskills outpost also has the option to camp if you’d prefer.

What to Expect from Getaway House:
  • 1 or 2 bed cabins
  • Heating and AC
  • Private bathroom and a kitchen
  • Outdoor area with fire pit, picnic table, and chairs
  • Tech-free activities: games, crayons, books, and a radio
  • Limited cell service and no Wifi to help you disconnect
  • Parking

I was surprised by how spacious and comfortable each Getaway House was — they know how to utilize the small space. My favorite part was the comfy bed with a window wall looking straight into the forest. It really opened up the space and made you feel like you were sleeping in nature. I loved having my morning coffee in bed and soaking up the scenery.

Getaway House is the ideal eco-friendly accommodation, making sustainability comfortable and stylish. They take several measures to conserve resources such as limited hot water and energy-efficient lighting. Each cabin is only cleaned at the end of your stay so you’re encouraged to reuse your towels and bedding.

Gateway House
Getaway House has the following sustainable amenities:
  • Equipped kitchen with a refrigerator, stovetop, dishes, cookware, and utensils
  • Drinkable water
  • Responsibly-sourced provisions such as coffee, tea, and kitchen basics
  • Chargeable lantern
  • Reusable sponge and sustainable dish soap
  • Biodegradable toiletries: shampoo, conditioner, and body wash
  • Fire log bundles (available for purchase)
Gateway House

I loved getting back to the cabin after spending the day in the city and building a fire. Each house comes with individually portioned fire kits so that you don’t use more firewood or kindling than necessary. Plus, they have a S’mores kit available for purchase which gave the two of us two S’mores each.

While there are several hotel options in Catskill and the surrounding areas, I can’t recommend Getaway House enough. I would, however, recommend renting a car during your trip to the Catskills, especially if you plan to hike. However, we didn’t have a car during our stay and it was still easy to schedule transportation throughout the Catskills.

Where to Eat in Catskill, New York:

I was really impressed with the food options in Catskill. We didn’t have a bad meal throughout the trip! I’m plant-based, so it’s usually harder to find something to eat in smaller towns. That was not the case in Catskill — there were so many plant-based options.

Some of my favorite local or plant-based places to eat in Catskill were:

Mermaid Cafe

This funky “fam to picnic table” cafe is located right on Main Street with bright decor that you can’t miss. They have a variety of Western and Asian-influenced dishes, featuring vegan versions of everything, plus local ethically-raised meat. Plus they sell artisan goods like tote bags, lip balm, and local wine.

Bittersweet Catskill Cafe

Bittersweet Catskill

Right next to Mermaid Cafe, you’ll find Bittersweet Catskill. You don’t want to miss out on this locally run ice cream shop. They make delicious, fresh premium flavors and they also offer vegan options.

HiLo Catskill

One of my favorite cafes in Catskill was HiLo. They serve local coffee, freshly baked pastries, and bagels as well as a small menu with ample plant-based options. With hip decor, HiLo has a selection of games for patrons to enjoy their time here. They also feature local art and sell a selection of items to inspire mindfulness: yoga mats, books, and journals.

Willa’s Bakery

A popular local bakery and cafe, this family-run spot is the perfect place to enjoy brunch or lunch. At Willa’s, you’ll find goods baked from scratch and a menu centered around seasonal ingredients from local farmers. The hip industrial location also offers wonderful views of Catskill Creek.

Gracie’s Luncheonette

A local institution, this old-timey diner is the perfect place to find American comfort food, made from scratch. Gracie’s is known for their delicious donuts and classic dishes like fried chicken, burgers, and brisket. They source most of their ingredients locally. Plus, they have a surprising amount of plant-based options so it’s a great choice for all dietary restrictions.

Sustainable Things to do in Catskill, New York:

If you’re wondering what to do in the Catskills, you’ve come to the right place. For such a small town, there are plenty of things to do and see throughout.

Local, Sustainable, and Vintage Shopping

Within seconds of walking down Main Street, you will stumble across numerous vintage or antique storefronts. There is a fantastic variety of local shopping here, making it one of the best sustainable things to do in Catskill.

Catskill shops

Some of my favorite sustainable stores in Catskill, NY are:

Go Hiking

The Catskills are famous for their mountains, so a trip here isn’t complete without going hiking. This is one of the best things to do in the Catskills in Spring because you can enjoy the waterfalls but also have warm weather.

Depending on your tolerance to the cold, hiking in Catskill is almost a year-round activity.

The best Catskill hikes are as follows:

Kaaterskills Falls

By far the most popular hike in the Catskill mountains is Kaaterskills Falls. It’s easy to see why when you visit these gorgeous cascading waterfalls. You can easily view the upper falls from a lookout, or do the short yet challenging out and back hike.

North/South Lake

This is a gorgeous, lowkey hike centered around the lake. You can swim or kayak in parts of the lake and even camp. If you want a longer trek, this trail can easily be combined with nearby Kaaterskills Falls.

Hudson River Art Trail

There are so many historic places to visit in the Catskills. The Hudson River Art Trail can help you narrow it down, by providing a map and guide to 20 different sites throughout the area. A community-led initiative, each sight featured was the subject of a 19th-century Hudson River School painting.

Choose your desired destination, like Olana State Historic Site or Sunset Rock, and they will give you the history as well as everything you need to know to visit. This is the perfect sustainable activity for art, history, and nature lovers.

Enjoy a Local Cider Tasting at Left Bank Ciders

Upstate New York is known for their ciders thanks to its bountiful and varied apple selection. If you want to taste cider, then you need to stop by Left Bank Ciders. Located right on Kaaterskill Creek, Left Bank makes small-batch ciders featuring local flavors.

I recommend the tasting flight so you can try six different varieties. You can also take some ciders to go to enjoy back at your accommodation. If you’re here on a Thursday, stop by for their Farmer’s Night Market.

More into beer than cider? Catskill has several local breweries to choose from. Check out Subversive Brewing, they brew and malt their beer in-house.

See a Show or Visit the Theater

Catskill is a surprisingly artistic and creative town. Home to several theaters, you can find live music, plays, or see a movie, most nights of the week. It’s easy to support local artists on a trip to the Catskills.

Some great, independent and local venues to support are:

Explore Neighboring Hudson

If you’re looking for things to do near the Catskills, there are plenty of interesting neighboring towns.

Hudson is the closest town to Catskill, just 15 minutes away across the Hudson River. If you’re taking the train here, you’ll arrive and depart from Hudson and it’s definitely worth spending some time in.

Walk up and down Warren Street and stop in sustainable boutiques, vintage shops, and family-owned restaurants. Hudson has a similar vibe to Catskill, but it’s a little bigger and more upscale.

You’ll also find several places to enjoy wine tasting, as well as more accommodation options in Hudson.

Once you’re done exploring, just hop on the Amtrak and head back to New York City.

If you’re into sustainable living, you’re probably into the great outdoors. After all, what’s more sustainable than camping in nature? While there are several things we can do to ensure we’re camping sustainably, what we bring with us also matters. Choosing sustainable camping gear helps protect the natural surroundings you’re visiting — and beyond.

We’ve put together a handy list of sustainable camping gear essentials to ensure that what you pack doesn’t harm the environment.

What is Sustainable Camping Gear?

Sustainable camping gear is essentially gear made in an eco-friendly way. This means your camping gear was most likely produced by a conscious brand using environmentally friendly and socially responsible production methods.

Sustainable camping gear will be virgin synthetic-free whenever possible and made from natural and/or recycled materials. It won’t contain any materials or chemicals that would be harmful to the natural environment.

This can look like tents made from recycled materials or non-toxic and biodegradable dish soap.

Where You Should Look For Sustainable Camping Gear

The most sustainable camping gear is the gear you already own. While it may be tempting to go out and buy all the latest, eco-friendly gadgets, try to resist. If you already own usable camping gear, that’s your most sustainable option.

If you’re missing camping essentials, however, consider renting items before purchasing. Many sporting goods stores, even campgrounds, rent essential items like tents, stoves, sleeping bags, or clothes. Renting is a wonderful sustainable option if you’re not a regular camper and won’t be using these items regularly.

You could also consider purchasing items secondhand on online retailers like OfferUp or visit a secondhand shop near you. Some brands, like Patagonia and REI also sell used camping gear.

Lastly, you can purchase eco-friendly camping gear from sustainable brands if you’re planning on camping often or you’ll continuously use these items.

To support you on your sustainable camping journey, we’ve put together a list of the top sustainable camping gear items, and where to find them, below.

Note that this guide may contain affiliate links, meaning we’ll earn a small commission should you choose to purchase through one of these links. As always all featured products meet strict standards for sustainability and are from brands we love!

Eco Friendly Tents

The number one item for a successful camping trip is a tent. Unfortunately, tents are typically made from PVC and coated with flame retardants. Choosing a sustainable tent will help limit your impact on the environment.

A great place to find a large selection of eco-friendly tents is Vaude. All of their sustainable tents are made from PVC-free, waterproof fabric and coated with silicone. They use DAC aluminum poles and their ground sheets are made from recycled materials.

Vaude has a range of tent sizes to choose from to fit all your needs from backpacking to group camping. Plus, they are a carbon neutral company.

Check out Vaude Here

Eco Friendly Sleeping Bag

Another sustainable camping gear necessity is a sleeping bag. Many traditional sleeping bags are made with synthetic materials or Down feathers that aren’t responsibly sourced. Not to mention, they are most likely not ethically manufactured.

A great company that makes eco friendly sleeping bags is Cotopaxi. They are a certified B Corp, Carbon Neutral, and give back to various social organizations.

Their Noches sleeping bag is made from repurposed fabric and filled with recycled polyester.

Check out Cotopaxi Here

Sustainable Camping Chairs

There’s nothing better than sitting in front of the fire, roasting some marshmallows, and relaxing in your camping chair. While camping chairs are usually durable and comfortable, they also tend to be made from synthetic materials (i.e. plastic) and coated in toxic chemicals.

A great sustainable camping chair alternative is the Renewed Bamboo Chair from Snow Peak. Plastic-free, their camping chairs are made from cotton canvas with a bamboo and aluminum frame.

Snow Peaks products are meant to last a lifetime. They have begun implementing sustainability measures such as carbon offsetting and using recycled materials.

It’s worth noting that most camping chairs on the market are not fully sustainable. Many companies have made efforts to design more eco-friendly camping chairs, but they still have a long way to go.

Check out Snow Peak Here

Plastic-Free Headlamp

Having light while camping is essential, so choosing a headlamp that will power you through your trip is crucial. Unfortunately, many headlamps don’t take sustainability into account and are made from plastic and/or still require batteries (leading to e-waste).

When choosing a sustainable headlamp, look for plastic-free ones with a rechargeable battery. Origin 2 by Eukarya is a great place to start. Their rechargeable, water-resistant head lamps are made from cherry wood and aluminum.

Check out Eukarya Here

Plastic free Headlamp from Eukarya

Sustainable Cooler

Coolers are essential for keeping our food fresh and edible throughout our trip. Most coolers however are made from new plastic (sourced from fossil fuels).

One fantastic option is the Hielo 12L Cooler Bag by Cotopaxi. Each one of a kind cooler is made from repurposed leftover fabric. They are handmade and ethically manufactured. Cotopaxi coolers are insulated with repurposed foam, waterproof lining, and an easy to carry side strap.

Check out Cotopaxi Here

Eco Friendly Camping Stove

Camping stoves often generate waste with hard to dispose gas canisters. Plus, they use toxic fossil fuels like gas and petroleum. Making the swap to a wood burning camping stove is a great solution to this.

One fantastic option for a sustainable camping stove is the CampStove 2+ from BioLite. This portable wood burning stove uses fire to provide electricity. Each stove includes a USB charger for your gadgets. You can light it with debris from around the camp, like twigs, and cook while charging your phone.

BioLite is passionate about providing solar power to those without, globally. So far they’ve given power to 3.5 million people.

Check out BioLite Here

Reusable Kitchenware

Disposable dishes generate unnecessary waste and most of our packaged food options come in plastic. It may seem tricky to pack and eat your food in a low waste way when camping, but it’s easier than you think.

How? Pack reusable items made from sturdy materials. United by Blue is a one stop shop for finding eco friendly camping dinnerware, cups, and water bottles. They have a variety of bamboo tupperware, silicone sandwich bags, and stainless steel cooking ware and dinner sets. (Remember to use what you already have at home first, though, before buying new dinnerware!)

Biodegradable Dish Soap

A camping essential that often gets overlooked is dish soap. Many of us may think we can bring our daily dish soap camping, but unfortunately, that’s not the case. Traditional dish soap contains chemicals that shouldn’t be dumped in the woods, rivers, or oceans. It’s best to choose a non-toxic, biodegradable soap.

Tangie has a wonderful line of waste free products including their zero waste dish soap bars. Their bars come in compostable packaging and are plastic-free.

Each bar is made from four natural, biodegradable ingredients, so you can use Tangie’s dish soap outside without hurting the environment.

Zero Waste Toiletries

Last but not least for sustainable camping necessities is zero waste toiletries. Just like dish soap, it’s important to prioritize packing non-toxic, biodegradable toiletries when you’re camping.

Avoid bringing single-use toiletries packaged in plastic that you have to toss out and opt for zero waste options instead when possible.

Here are recommendations for the most common toiletries:

Zero waste toiletries
  • Shampoo and Conditioner Bars by Corvus Botanicals: Palm-oil free, with sustainably sourced ingredients.
  • Tewín’xw Cranberry Facial Bar by Skwalwen Botanicals: Indigenous owned, this sustainable cleanser doubles as a make-up remover.
  • Alkalizing Mineral Toothpaste by Uncle Harry’s: Family-run, zero waste toothpaste from chemical-free, plant-based ingredients.
  • Essential Soap Bars by Yukon Soaps: Indigenous owned, handcrafted soaps made from wild-harvested ingredients.
  • Moisturizing Botanical Bar by Nopalera: Handmade, vegan, plant based lotion with no added chemicals.

Spending time in nature is one of the most natural things we can do. A weekend camping in the woods allows us to recharge from our busy, stimulating city lives and go off-grid.

Unfortunately, camping isn’t always sustainable if we aren’t mindful of our actions. Adopting sustainable camping practices is an easy way to ensure we’re protecting and respecting the natural environment.

What Is Eco Camping?

Eco camping is camping in a way that leaves the smallest negative impact possible on the natural environment. Sustainable camping means being mindful of what we pack and what we do while camping.

This can look like supporting campgrounds that are transparent about their sustainable practices, only choosing activities we know how to do responsibly, or not posting the location of local camping spots on social media.

Why Is Eco-Friendly Camping Important?

While living a sustainable lifestyle is important in general, it’s essential when we’re directly interacting with the outdoors. When we’re camping, we’re in wild, natural environments that humans don’t usually spend time in.

Many of these areas don’t typically experience day-to-day pollution and they are also vital natural habitats for animals and plant species. Keeping them protected ensures that these environments remain healthy and thriving.

When we choose to adopt sustainable camping habits, we can safely enjoy the great outdoors without endangering it.

10 Sustainable Camping Tips

1. Pay the Fees

Most official campsites and parks have entrance, camping, or hiking fees. While this can unfortunately make these areas less accessible, fees do serve a purpose.

The fees are used to protect the natural surroundings you plan to enjoy. They ensure facilities are maintained, park rangers are paid, and these beautiful areas stay beautiful.

Many parks, however, operate on an honor system with little to no regulation. It can be tempting to skip out on paying, but please pay the fee so that these precious spaces can be enjoyed for decades to come.

2. Stay in Designated Areas

While it may seem harmless to explore off-trail or to try to find a secret campsite, it may not be sustainable. Campgrounds and natural parks have designated areas for hiking and camping for a reason.

Staying in designated areas maintains the natural habitat, respects the wildlife, and helps you avoid unpleasant experiences like poison oak. If you’re interested in exploring more remote or off-the-beaten-path destinations, check out the next tip to do so sustainably.

3. Research Your Location Beforehand

Before you head off into the woods or the desert, take the time to research your location. Are you going on a rugged backpacking trip? Then make sure you know where you’re going, what you need to bring, what the natural environment is like, and what species are native to the area.

It’s also a good idea to know the history of the area you’re planning to camp in. Are there any current issues like overtourism or water pollution that you should be aware of? How does the local community feel about tourists camping and hiking in the area? What problems has it posed?

Once you’ve done your research, you can camp in a way that doesn’t negatively impact the community.

4. Choose Campgrounds that are Eco-Friendly

It may seem like all campgrounds should be eco-friendly. After all, they are right in the middle of nature! But, this actually isn’t always the case. It’s important to research what type of facilities your campground offers and how they maintain them.

If you can, find designated eco-friendly campgrounds in your area but keep in mind that not all eco camps are advertised as such. When choosing a campground, try to find out who runs the campground, what environmental initiatives they are taking, and how they dispose of camper’s waste.

5. Plan Trips Outside of Peak Season

Peak season is usually during the summertime or dry season, which makes perfect sense. After all, why wouldn’t you want to enjoy the great outdoors during the nicest time of the year? That being said, there’s usually some wiggle room on this timeline so that you’re not camping right when everyone else is.

Camping is a particularly popular activity in places like California, but guess what? California has great weather year-round. You don’t have to visit June-September to still enjoy the surroundings.

If you need to camp during peak season, choose lesser-known campgrounds and save the most popular ones for off-season. This will also increase your chances of getting a campsite while lowering costs.

6. Leave No Trace

A common saying for hikers and campers is “pack out what you pack in.” Sustainable camping means leaving little to no trace. Campgrounds usually have designated dumpsters for your trash, so please do not litter and dispose of your waste properly.

If there’s no trash collection in the area, bring your own bags and hold on to them until you’re back in an area where you can properly throw them away.

When packing up your campsite, check to make sure that the surrounding area is just as it was when you arrived. Ideally, though, avoid bringing things that will generate waste in the first place. How? By following the next tip.

7. Bring Reusable, Plastic-Free Items

Packing reusable, plastic-free items helps prevent excess trash during your camping trip. Bring your reusable water bottle instead of a plastic water bottle. Check to see if the campsite has a water refill station. If it doesn’t, plan ahead so you have enough water to last the trip.

Pack items like coffee, tea, snacks, and dry goods, in reusable jars or containers to prevent packaging waste. If you can, make your meals beforehand so that you can also bring them in sustainable containers.

Shampoo, conditioner, and soap bars are great zero-waste items to bring. Resist buying single-use items like disposable wipes or travel-size toothpaste. Instead, pack the toiletries you already have.

Reusable waterbottle

8. Choose Toiletries & Cleaning Items That Are Environmentally Safe

One of the most important things we can do when camping sustainably is to ensure that our toiletries and cleaning products aren’t harmful to the natural environment.

When camping, you’ll most likely be brushing your teeth, washing your body, or cleaning your dishes, outdoors. It’s important that these products are truly natural and biodegradable so they don’t pollute the surrounding environment.

Don’t forget to use the same standards for the things you’re putting directly on your body — especially when it comes to sunscreen that can sweat or wash off into local waterways.

Using toiletries outside

9. Use What You Have, Rent What You Don’t

It’s tempting to go out and buy all the latest gadgets and gear for your camping trip, but try to resist this urge!

Unless you’re a regular camper, most of that gear won’t be used, making it an unsustainable purchase. Chances are, you already have the essential items like reusable containers, water bottles, suitable clothing, blankets, pillows, and maybe even a sleeping bag.

If there’s something you truly need to get, like a tent, or a camping stove, you can rent it. You don’t need to buy these items brand new. Check out your nearby sporting goods store or do a quick Google search to find out where to rent the camping gear you need.

If you do need something, shop secondhand first! REI has a Used Gear marketplace for all sorts of needs.

10. Pack Sustainable Gear

When deciding what to pack, prioritize your items made from natural fabrics to limit the spread of microplastics and minimize our impact.

If you own non-synthetic material shoes, activewear, swimwear, or backpacks, move these items to the top of your packing list.

Final Notes on Sustainable Camping

Sustainable camping doesn’t have to be complicated. If you love the outdoors enough to go camping in them, chances are you already know how to do so somewhat responsibly!

Following the tips above will ensure that your next camping trip is both fun for you and respectful of the natural environment you’re choosing to visit.
