This is your go-to guide to sustainable bedding, featuring over 30 eco-friendly bedding brands with organic cotton, TENCEL™ Lyocell, hemp, and linen sheets, comforters, duvets, duvet covers, mattress toppers, and more.
This guide to brands is separated by bedding material, so before we dive into the guide, let’s talk about each type of fabric!
Organic Cotton:
Cotton is a natural fiber — but that doesn’t make it eco-friendly. Growing the cotton crop gobbles up 16% of the world’s insecticides (that’s out of the total pesticides used for food and fiber production combined) while it’s grown on just 2.5% of the world’s land. Organic cotton, on the other hand is free of synthetic pesticides and is never genetically modified. (Just like organic food!) And when we’re talking about bed sheets that we’re getting up close and personal with, we want that stuff to be clean!
When shopping for organic cotton sheets, look for the GOTS-certified seal. That label, which stands for Global Organic Textile Standard, is the highest certification an organic fiber can achieve. Not only does GOTS mean that the cotton crop was grown organically, but it ensures that the entire product was manufactured in a socially and environmentally-friendly way.
Linen:
There are lots of reasons to love linen. Linen is more durable and dries faster than cotton, plus it doesn’t pill easily, and is temperature regulating (making linen the perfect fabric for year-round sheets that will keep you cool in warm months and warm in cooler months!)
And flax, the plant that linen is made from, requires very few (if any) chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Though conventional linen is generally preferred over conventional cotton, organic linen takes it up even one notch higher! Again, GOTS is the certification to look for when shopping for organic linen sheets, though you typically have to pay a significant premium for organic linen. (Want to bring linen into other parts of your life? Take a look at this guide for linen clothing brands.)
TENCEL™ Lyocell:
TENCEL™ Lyocell is a silky smooth fabric that’s made from the wood pulp of eucalyptus trees sourced from responsibly-managed forests. This pulp is turned into fabric using a closed loop production process in Austria by the brand Lenzing. This fiber is breathable, soft to the touch, absorbent, and gentle yet durable. Read more about TENCEL™ here.
Hemp:
Hemp is a hero when it comes to sustainable fibers. Not only does hemp grow super quickly, but it’s hearty and doesn’t require much water to grow. Not to mention, on the same amount of land, you can grow 250% more hemp than cotton and 6 TIMES more fiber than flax. Oh, and there isn’t even currently a known genetically modified hemp crop!
That said, hemp bedding is still not as widely available as the other materials on this list, and tends to lean on the more expensive side.
Brands included in this guide are partners or affiliates. As always all brands featured in guides on Conscious Life & Style meet high standards for sustainability and are brands I believe in!
