A durable set of eco-friendly dinnerware is a solid ingredient for a sustainably set table! But…

What is Sustainable Dinnerware?

Well looking for secondhand and vintage dinnerware is always a good start, whether that’s your grandmother’s porcelain dining sets or a pre-loved set of colorful plates and bowls at your local thrift store.

Another great place to look is estate sales. You can likely find full sets of dinnerware! If none of those options are available to you (or your just not finding something you love) you can check out a site like Etsy Used or Chairish.

*Important note on used dinnerware: the FDA started regulating the use of lead in dinnerware in 1971. So you might want to avoid any dinnerware produced before 1971, unless it’s just for display!

Here are some qualities to look for when shopping for new sustainable dinnerware:

Sustainably sourced materials: such as responsibly-harvested bamboo and recycled glass.

Quality: when it comes to products you’re going to potentially use and wash daily, durability is an important factor to keep in mind. Also consider your lifestyle! Perhaps glass and porcelain aren’t the best choices if you have little ones, or you tend to drop things often. (Guilty!!)

Usefulness: You might also want to consider if you will be hand-washing or dishwashing your dinnerware. Some materials are too fragile for the dishwasher, so consider if you’ll have the time (and willingness) to hand wash them all the time. Because part of sustainability is that you’ll actually use the products and they won’t just sit and collect dust! 😉

Ethical production: this could look like transparent local manufacturing or artisan-made and fair trade. In any case, an ethical dinnerware brand would prioritize fair living wages for the workers, ensure safe healthy conditions (this includes no toxic chemicals used in production!) and go above and beyond to consider the wellbeing of the people who work for them and/or produce their products.

Ownership and Equity: this means looking at who owns and profits from the brands we’re supporting; if a brand is owned by a person of color, it will be indicated in their description below (BIPOC-owned stands for Black, Indigenous, Person of Color-owned and WOC-owned stands for Woman of Color-owned).

Your Values: you may have other elements you look for in a brand, such as traditional craft preservation. Or perhaps it’s really important to you that a brand is giving back to their local community.

Where to Find Eco-Friendly Dinnerware

The eco-friendly tableware and sustainable dinnerware brands featured below meet at least one (though most of them meet several) of the above criteria.

In this roundup, you’ll find sustainable pottery (including ceramic plates, sustainable mugs, and more), recycled glassware, artisan-made ethical dinnerware, and everything in between to suit your needs. I hope that this variety of brands will help you set the table, whether that’s for fancy dinner parties, Friday night pizza, or something in between.

Just like fashion has been overrun by fast fashion, home goods and furniture have similarly seen a rapid decline in quality. Rugs are no exception.

And similar to fashion, these cheap goods come at a high cost — namely, to the planet and to people. In fact carpet and rug production is rampant with child labor and trafficked labor.

On the other hand, fair trade rugs present the best of what a rug can bring to your home: artistry, craftsmanship, and heritage.

The brands featured in this guide are partnering with (and fairly paying!) skilled artisans who are using generations-old — and sometimes even centuries-old — techniques. These artisans are sustaining long lines of crafts, preserving their cultural diversity, and celebrating the richness of their time-honored crafts.

There’s simply no replacement for a timeless, quality artisan-made rug — they’re like pieces of art you can lay out on your floor or hang on your walls.

So, enjoy browsing through this guide to sustainable rug brands listed out below and best of luck on your search for the right fair trade rug!

Style your home sustainably with fair trade and eco-friendly curtains that are not only designed beautifully, but are light on the planet and good for people, too.

Why Sustainable Curtains?

Materials:

Most curtains are made from synthetic fabrics like polyester (which is made using petroleum) or other unsustainably sourced fibers like viscose and rayon (which are made from tree pulp and have been linked to the deforestation of endangered and old-growth forests).

Toxic Chemicals:

Not only are synthetic fabrics and dyes harmful to the environment, but they’re harmful to human health as well (after all, we are part of the environment).

Vinyl curtains are among the worst culprits as they’re typically made from PVC. Research has shown that these PVC curtains contain toxic chemicals like volatile organic compounds (VOCs) phthalates, and organotins.

Labor Issues

As with literally every industry, home goods like curtains are often made in a global supply chain with little transparency and traceability. Sweatshops, child labor, and forced labor are a reality in textile factories (and farms, mills etc.) and unless a company can prove otherwise, they may not know if this is taking place in their supply chain.

How Can I Identify What Sustainable Curtains Are?

Materials:

Look for organic and low-impact natural fibers such as organic cotton, linen, and hemp! I like to look for the GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification for organic cotton from larger brands.

But, for smaller brands with traceable supply chains, they don’t necessarily need to pay for an expensive certification to verify that the cotton was grown in a sustainable way. In fact, traditional cotton growing practices are organic! Some farmers have never used synthetic pesticides or genetically modified seeds and have stuck to their traditional and indigneous practices.

Dyes and Chemicals:

Look for plant-based dyes, non-toxic mordants (what sets the dyes onto the fabric), and avoid toxic finishes. You can identify if a product was made with finishes if the product description says something like “wrinkle free” or “stain resistant”. Water or stain-repellent products may contain PFAS (also called “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment or in your body).

Ethical Production:

See if the brand offers transparency into their production. Do they ensure fair wages and benefits, safe conditions, and reasonable working hours? Do they have certifications, photos, audits, or records of previous visits to facilities to back this up? Or even better, does the brand have direct partnerships with the artisans, weavers, sewers, and dyers?

As always, there is more that you can look for. You may want to support BIPOC-owned and/or woman-owned brands, and maybe you like to buy from brands with strong donation initiatives. But the above list is something to get started with!

Note that this guide includes affiliates and partners. As always, all brands featured meet rigorous sustainability criteria and are brands we love — and that we think you’ll love too!

Curating a conscious home is a thoughtful process involving much consideration — who made my products, how they were made, and what are they made from — and this guide aims to support you on your journey towards finding ethical and sustainable home decor you truly love.

What is Sustainable Home Decor?

Sustainable home decor includes any home decor that is made in a way that takes into consideration both the makers and the planet. Sustainable home decor will be ethically made using eco-friendly and natural materials. Eco-friendly decor will also be produced using sustainable supply chain practices. This includes using renewable energy and recycled or compostable packaging.

While there are numerous sustainable home decor brands, some of which are featured below, first consider what’s already been made in order to prevent contributing to new waste. Secondhand, used, or DIY home decor options are typically more sustainable than buying new.

What is Ethical and Fair Trade Home Decor?

Ethical and Fair Trade home decor is produced in a way that adheres to Fair Trade standards and is, ideally, Fair Trade Certified. Fair Trade means paying artisans and makers a fair, living wage and providing ethical working conditions. Ethical home decor also includes supporting goods made by artisans using traditional heritage techniques and art forms. Many cultures around the world are at risk of losing their age-old artisanal crafts forever in the age of mass manufacturing.

It’s important to note that sometimes a major brand may use an “eco” fiber while still supporting irresponsible labor practices, and excessive production amounts that inevitably lead to a lot of waste. This is not true sustainability in my mind!

Most artisan-made home decor is ethically produced and directly supports the makers. However, it’s important to check if a brand or marketplace is transparent about their business practices to ensure they are ethical or Fair Trade.

Where Can You Find Sustainable Home Decor?

In terms of environmental sustainability, looking secondhand and vintage is always a great first place to look for sustainable home decor.

But if you’ve scoured those options and haven’t found what you’re looking for and/or if you’re looking to financially support artisans and traditional crafts around the globe, this shopping guide is designed for you. You’ll discover many brands with artfully designed and artisan handmade goods for furnishing any space among this list of decor brands.

All of the brands in this guide use natural and/or recycled fibers and avoid the use of virgin synthetics like polyester; however, some brands do use materials that are not the most environmentally-friendly option on the market, such as conventional cotton.

And of course, I wanted to choose brands that followed slow, thoughtful production practices, prioritizing artisan handmade over factory labor and quality over quantity.

So without further ado, here are my favorite small-batch, artisan-made, and ethical home decor brands.

Note that this guide includes partners affiliate links — as always, all brands are vetted for sustainability and ethics and are brands I truly believe in!

The right set of ethical throw pillows can instantly transform your space — they can add rich textures, bring in fresh colors, and celebrate artisanal heritage.

What Are Sustainable or Ethical Throw Pillows?

As always, there is no black-or-white answer and there are multiple considerations and layers at play. You may not necessarily find a brand that meets all of these criteria but generally speaking, some elements to look for are:

Ethical Manufacturing:

Does the brand follow transparent and responsible production practices? Do they have third-party verifications (not necessarily required, but can be an added bonus)? Do they pay living wages and offer benefits? What do they do to ensure a safe and healthy workplace?

Cultural Preservation:

In many areas in the world, traditional art forms and craft techniques are at risk of dying out or even going extinct. How is the brand supporting and celebrating the continuation of these generations-old traditions? (This includes paying artisans fair wages so that they can actually provide for themselves and their families with their art.)

Materials:

Does the brand use thoughtfully sourced natural materials like organic cotton, hemp, or linen? Do they use plant-based dyes or at least azo-free and non-toxic dyes?

Other Sustainable Practices:

Does the brand use renewable energy? Do they recycle their water and waste? Do they have eco-friendly packaging? What other ways are they working to minimize waste and emissions?

Ownership:

Who is behind this brand? Who is making the decisions and who is profiting? You may want to look for a Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color (BIPOC)-owned business, a Woman of Color (WOC)-owned business, or LGBTQIA+-owned business for instance.

Where to Find Sustainable Throw Pillows

The brands in this guide all meet multiple criteria listed above. Next to each brand description, the Conscious Qualities section will specify which criteria the brand meets.

Before we dive in, note that some of these brands have throw pillow covers that come without pillows inside. For eco-friendly pillow filling options, check out Carolina Morning, a woman-owned brand with fillings like buckwheat hulls, buckwheat pillows, and Kapok.

Oh, and for more responsibly-made design inspiration, check out this guide to ethical home decor and this one to eco-friendly furniture.

The post 10 Sustainable Mirrors That Will Add Function and Flair To Your Space appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

]]>
Whether you’re adding a sustainable mirror to your space for functionality or beauty — or perhaps both! — these mindfully crafted mirrors will help you complete your vision.

This guide features everything from rattan wall mirrors to industrial-grade bathroom mirrors to minimalist floor length mirrors.

What to Look for in a Sustainable Mirror:

While quality can vary, mirrors are all made from glass, which is generally regarded as a lower impact material. But there are a few more aspects to consider if you’re looking for an eco-friendly mirror.

1. Look Secondhand. Shopping for pre-loved mirrors keeps existing mirrors out of the landfill while reducing the need for new production. Get tips for shopping secondhand home goods here!

2. Materials. If shopping new, look for mirrors with eco-friendly frames made from materials like bamboo, rattan, or recycled metal.

3. Working Conditions & Craftsmanship. The people aspect of sustainability is just as important to consider. Does the brand publish information about how the mirror was made and if the makers earned fair, living wages? If they worked in safe conditions and had benefits? [Read more on ethical production here.]

Where to Find Sustainable Mirrors

Sustainable shopping isn’t easy, but we’re here to help! Check out the following vetted guide to sources for finding secondhand and sustainably-made mirrors.

Linen home decor is having a moment, but the fabric is more than just a trend — there are many benefits to linen, and as a durable fabric that only gets softer with age, linen home goods can be with you for many years to come!

The Benefits of Linen in Your Home

When it comes to home textiles, linen is a preferable fabric thanks to its thermal regulating properties (perfect for bedding & blankets) and its lived-in feeling (instantly makes a space feel more ‘home-y”!).

Plus, natural fibers are typically better when trying to keep your indoor air healthy and safe. That said, not all natural fabrics are created equal because they can still be grown with pesticides and be colored with toxic dyes or treated with potentially hazardous chemicals.

Look for certifications like Standard 100 by Oeko-Tex that vets products to ensure they are free of harmful substances. Not only is this good for you and your home, but it’s better for the outside environment as well.

Linen can also be a more eco-conscious fabric choice than conventional cotton and synthetic fabrics like polyester.

The plant used in linen, flax, often “comes close to the organic standard without trying” according to the CFDA, and in many cases can be cultivated with natural rainfall alone.

Where to Find Linen Home Goods

I’m excited to partner with Sauths for this guide because they have a beautiful selection of linen home decor and home goods. And their linen products are Oeko-Tex certified and all responsibly-made in small batches locally in Lithuania at a family-owned production house.

This factory uses geothermal heating, a clean self-renewable heating method that doesn’t release any harmful substances, to minimize their carbon footprint too!

Taking responsibility for their supply chain, every person involved in Sauths’ production process earns fair wages and has good working conditions and a safe environment. Sauths ensures that the high working standards set by the European Union are being met through regular third-party audits.

Another highlight of Sauths is that they have a zero waste mindset and have no production waste. Larger scraps are upcycled into other textile products such as towels, hair bands, and bags while small pieces that aren’t suitable for textile items are recycled into other types of products.

And this sustainable mindset is ingrained in Sauths company culture too — a large proportion of Sauths factory team members commute by bicycle to work!

[This guide is sponsored by Sauths. As always, we only partner with brands who meet strict standards for sustainability and are brands we truly love — and that we think you’ll love too!]

Linen Bedding

Linen is such a wonderful fabric choice for bedding because it has natural thermal regulating properties, which keep you cool in hotter weather and cozy in colder weather.

The fabric is also more breathable than other common bedding materials like cotton and polyester blends.

This one from Sauths is available in Twin through California King for US customers and Single through Super King for EU and UK-based customers. Plus, it’s breathable, so it’ll keep you cozy without making you feel sweaty.

In this two-part series, our guest writer Amanda Tharp of the New Collective is sharing non-toxic home tips for making your space safer and healthier. Part 2 focuses on improving product health at home. [Read Part 1 on improving indoor air quality.]

One of my sustainability “sheroes” is a former colleague and mentor of mine, Kirsten Ritchie. An Engineer and sustainable product guru, Kirsten taught me that “if you can lick it, you better know what’s in it!”

I’m guessing you are not walking around your home licking the walls or sofa, but hear me out for a minute! To ensure you’re setting up a healthy home environment, it’s important to be mindful of the products you come into contact with every day.

Although you may not be licking these surfaces, a child or pet may be and, at the least, your skin is likely coming into contact with them (for example, sitting on a sofa, or touching the dining table).

We all know the foods we eat are vitally important in the effort to lead a healthy life. While subtler in nature, your skin is your biggest organ with the capacity to absorb what you put onto it and transfer it into your bloodstream.

For this reason — in addition to air quality concernsthe products you physically come into contact with every day can impact your personal health.

From irritating your skin to causing birth defects and cancer, the vast array of chemical ingredients in production come with a vast array of potentially dangerous side effects. The Environmental Working Group’s classification system is a useful guide in ensuring the products you use every day are safe enough for you and your loved ones.

The good news is more ingredient transparency exists today than ever before, making it simpler to rule out dangerous products with a little forethought and research, which the below tips will walk you through.

4 Tips To Improve Your Product Health at Home

1. Opt for the Real Deal

This is a great two-for-one to-do item as it is featured in our air quality tip list as well.

Items that will come into contact with your skin regularly, and therefore could leave a residue and be absorbed (such as sofas, lounge chairs, bedding, and bath linens), should be selected very thoughtfully. Opt for natural textiles and materials free of applied stain-resistant, antimicrobial or water-resistant finishes. Although from a cleanability standpoint these sound too good to be true, these applied finishes have been proven to be harmful to human health and should be avoided.

2. Keep it Clean, Kids

It’s important to filter your drinking water, but I suggest going a step further to add a filter to your shower head and faucets as well. We live in Pittsburgh, a great city for many reasons but notorious for high levels of lead in water particularly in historic areas of town like my neighborhood. When we first moved here my fiance and I immediately bought a heavy-duty filter for our drinking water.

However, before long, we noticed we were developing skin reactions after showering. We had not considered the same lead-heavy water we had been afraid to drink was being absorbed by our skin with each shower and handwashing!

3. Teflon: the Canary in the Coal Mine

I think my Mom loves me just a teeny tiny bit less every time I advocate for nixing Teflon in lieu of cast iron, ceramic, stainless, and copper cookware! (Sorry, Mom.) Some suggest Teflon’s impact on our human health is a grey area, but as one expert says

“Never cook on Teflon or other nonstick cookware with a pet bird in the kitchen. The fumes from an overheated pan can kill a bird in seconds.”

If the fumes can kill a bird in seconds it’s likely not great for you either — because there are safer options readily available, I recommend opting for an alternative.

4. Keep Your Cookware off the Menu

Plastic of any kind coming into contact with food can transfer or “leach” very small amounts of the plastic into the food. This is typically considered too minuscule an amount to be considered dangerous, however, the potential of that plastic to build up in our body overtime should not be ignored. Furthermore, heating plastic as is typical when reheating in a microwave oven is proven to leach far more plastic than if it is kept at a cold temperature.

I suggest removing the plastic, plastic wrap and foil from your kitchen. Opt for wood, stone or glass cutting boards, glass storage containers, and heating on the stove rather than in the microwave. When storing food, beeswax is a healthier alternative to plastic wrap or foil.

Minimize Outside Influencers

In addition to the products we come into contact with and those impacting the quality of the air we breathe, there are additional influencers like light intrusion and electromagnetic forces we can control to further improve the health of our homes.

Tips to Beat Light Pollution

Light pollution can interfere with our natural circadian rhythms and impact our health over time. This light may come from an outside street lamp or from the blue light of your late-night social media scrolling (I’m guilty of this one).

No matter the source, this interfering light can make it more difficult to fall asleep, disrupt your natural secretion of melatonin, decrease your REM sleep time, make you groggy in the morning and impact your long-term health. Try the following tips to retake your light night sleep.

Healthy Home Tips: Wake Up With the Sun

1. Wake up with the sun.

A quick shift of your furniture layout, orienting your bed to face an eastern window can help your body realign with its natural circadian rhythms.

2. Or, wake up with the (simulated) sun.

If eastern exposure isn’t possible in your room, opt for a natural light alarm clock rather than using your cell phone.

These clocks simulate sunset and sunrise with color temperature to reset your circadian rhythm, helping you to sleep and waking you up gently in the morning.

3. Stop scrolling.

Use a timer to remind yourself to put down the phone 1 – 1.5 hours before you need to fall asleep. The blue light from your cell phone is mentally stimulating, leading to eye strain, making it difficult for you to fall asleep, and to get an adequate amount of much-needed REM sleep.

4. Shut it down.

If you live in the city or have light pollution coming in at all hours of the day, try installing blackout shades to set yourself up for a healthy night’s rest.

If your budget allows, you can have these installed with a timer allowing you to program them to open at sunrise or whenever you’d like to get moving.

Tips To Beat Electromagnetic Radiation

In addition to light pollution, today our bodies face interference from an onslaught of electromagnetic radiation.

From the very low frequencies of our computers and outside power lines to mid frequencies of our Bluetooth devices, wifi routers, smart home devices, cellphones, and televisions, to higher frequencies from our microwave ovens, and for some of us, the highest radiation levels from x-rays and therapeutic based radiation treatments, these outside influencers are ever-present in our lives.

Only time will tell what kinds of health implications our devices and their resulting forces will create for us long-term.

Non-Toxic Home Tips

In the meantime, for those who are skeptical or like to live with a reasonable level of caution, there are ways to decrease the radiation in your life outside of bringing out a tin foil cap.

1. Slow it down.

Nix the microwave and throw your leftovers on the stovetop, plug in your popcorn makers, slow cookers, and the like.

2. What’s your Wifi password?

You’ll never have to worry about this again if you plug your laptop or desktop directly into the modem rather than relying on wifi.

3. Shut It Down.

If using WiFi, put your WiFi router on an appliance timer, set it to turn off when you are asleep, and/ or unplug the router when you are not at home.

4. Keep Big Brother At Bay.

Avoid Bluetooth headphones, smart home devices like Alexas, Nests, and Ecobees. Use your cell phone with headphones or speakerphone rather than holding it to your ear and mouth.

***

While there are many things out of your control this year, making your home healthier, beginning today is not one of them! Whether you are a renter or homeowner, live alone or with ten roommates, knowledge is power and there are many steps you can take to incrementally improve your air quality, the products you use and surround yourself with, and the outside influences which impact your daily life. With continued attention paid, demand for transparency and healthy products, you can continue to move the needle of progress forward and improve your daily life in the process.
