The post 17 Best Zero Waste & Sustainable Products for an Eco-Friendly Bathroom appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

]]>
The most recent focus in my Sustainable Swap Challenge has been creating a zero waste personal care routine, which has highlighted the need for some switches to sustainable bathroom products! There is a whole lot of plastic and waste in conventional bathroom products — not to mention toxic ingredients.

It can feel overwhelming, but that’s why I’m breaking down 17 switches we can make to transition to a more low waste, sustainable bathroom.

Note that this guide includes partners and affiliate links, which means we may earn a comission if you purchase via these links at no additional cost to you. This helps us continue to write more resources for you!

1. Organic Cotton Towels from Delilah Home

Plush organic cotton towels in white and light blue

Delilah Home’s naturally soft and fluffy organic towels are the perfect way to elevate your every day sustainably. I’m kind of swooning over how incredibly plush and luxurious these towels look — and the 20 customers who left five-star reviews can verify that these towels are as amazing as they appear!

The earth-minded brand’s towels are made from Turkish cotton that has been certified organic by the world’s leading organic certifying body, Global Organic Textile Standard. Delilah Home also has certifications from Green America, OneCert, and Textile Exchange.

2. Shampoo and Conditioner Bars

As you’re beginning to transition to a low-waste bathroom, the simplest thing to start with is to switch to bars! Every time you’re about to run out of something, like shampoo, that typically comes in a plastic bottle, think about getting that item in bar form the next time!

When you’re ready to zero waste your hair care routine, EcoRoots has you covered with plenty of options made with natural and organic ingredients. I got to test out their Forest Mist shampoo bar and conditioner bar and they smell incredible and they’ve worked great with my hair! The package-free bars are also palm oil-free and vegan. (You can explore more of their shampoo & conditioner bars in their Bath & Beauty collection.)

3. Refillable Body Wash & Hand Wash

When it comes to refillable body care products, Plaine Products is the leader! They have vegan zero waste body wash and hand wash that is palm-oil free and made with organic ingredients.

How it works: once you’re done with the body wash or hand wash, you can simply order a refill and send back your used aluminum bottle to be cleaned and reused.

And, when you buy these products from Green Eco Dream, you can subscribe and save 10% on Plaine Products’ refillable essentials!

4. All-Natural Low Waste Mouthwash

Low-waste refillable mouthwash can be a way to freshen your breath while minimizing waste. Most of the zero waste mouthwashes on the market today come in the form of tablets, which not everyone can get used to. And honestly, after switching to mouthwash tablets, I didn’t use my mouthwash as much since it wasn’t as convenient to use!

So Nix Mouthwash is a great natural mouthwash alternative that is easy to use, tastes great, and is still low waste. I found myself reaching for my Nix Mouthwash day after day even when I still had some mouthwash tablets to use up from another brand because Nix’s mouthwash is really just so much easier to use.

How does it work? Essentially your first package of Nix will be a filled mouthwash container and a glass jar for the refills.

Once the container is empty, simply put some scoops of the refills in the container and fill with water. When you’re out of refills, you can just order another glass jar of refills!

Everything else works just like regular mouthwash: you just pour the allocated amount out to swish around and spit out — there are no additional steps necessary!

5. Cocofloss

Cocofloss-and-cocobrush-Sustainable-bathroom-products
Conscious Life & Style Partner

There’s no need to sacrifice effectiveness for sustainability when it comes to your dental hygiene routine. Cocofloss’s award-winning textured dental floss is made from recycled plastic bottles and infused with cleansing, naturally antibacterial coconut oil and natural scents like spearmint oil. The recycled floss is woven into a textured weave that is super-effective at removing sticky plaque. It’s also free of toxins, including BPA, parabens, SLS, and PFAS.

And, to help reduce single-use plastics, Cocofloss offers floss refills in backyard compostable packaging. One reviewer shares that they’ve been using the same floss case for three years!

With 4.7 stars from nearly 6,000 reviews, you know Cocofloss is on to something!

Check out Cocofloss

6. David’s Recyclable Natural Toothpaste Tube

Zero Waste Toothpaste from David's Toothpaste

David’s natural toothpaste is one of the best on the market — it’s EWG-verified — which is the highest rating a product can receive from the Environmental Working Group — it’s not tested on animals, 98% of ingredients are sourced domestically in the US, and it comes in a recyclable metal tube!

You can also make your own DIY toothpaste if that’s something you feel comfortable with. Just make sure that the person making the recipe has ensured it’s effective — and you might want to consult with your dentist.

Check Out David’s Toothpaste on Green Eco Dream

7. Bamboo Toothbrush

It’s not hard to figure out that getting a new plastic toothbrush every few months adds up to whole lot of waste — now multiple that by everyone in the world that uses toothbrushes and we’ve got a serious problem. Bamboo toothbrushes can be an eco-friendly, compostable alternative.

The company I got my bamboo toothbrushes from a while back doesn’t look like it’s still around, but you can find bamboo toothbrushes at EcoRoots!

Check Out EcoRoots’ Bamboo Toothbrushes

8. Metal Safety Razor

It’s no secret that disposable plastic razors lead to massive waste — even back in the 1990s, the EPA estimated that Americans tossed 2 billion plastic razors per year! And I don’t think I’m alone when saying that it’s frustrating to be constantly forking over money for expensive blades!

The zero-waste swap for costly, wasteful razors? Long-lasting, durable metal safety razors. The EcoRoots team sent me one of their rose gold safety razors to try out and my friends, I cannot believe how different the experience is with a safety razor. For starters, it feels super chic that I actually kind of look forward to shaving. But beyond the aesthetics, the performance compared to disposable razors is making me wonder why I didn’t implement this switch sooner. Safety razors allow for a much closer shave, leaving a far smoother result.

Note: As with any other type of razor, using shaving soap and water reduces the risk of irritation or cuts!

Check Out EcoRoots’ Safety Razor

9. Organic Shaving Soap Bar

Speaking of shaving soap… EcoRoots also has a zero-waste solution for this. Their organic shaving soap bar is a nourishing formula combining coconut oil, avocado oil, and cocoa butter, with a lovely mix of essential oils, like lemon and lavender. The soap, by the way, smells fantastic — it’s one of those scents that can instantly brighten your mood!

I also loved that the soap came plastic-free and very package-light to minimize waste.

10. Bathroom Accessories from Full Circle Home

Full Circle Home has elegant plastic-free bathroom accessories built to last. Their products are made from earth-minded materials like bamboo, ceramic, and recycled glass. (Their soap dispenser is partially made from recycled plastic.)

I have the brand’s toothbrush holder and the soap dish and they look really sleek and are made with great quality. They also clean up very nicely!

Check out the 4-Piece Full Circle Home Set from Green Eco Dream

11. TUSHY Attachable Bidet

TUSHY Bidet Review

Bidets are a no-brainer to me when it comes to sustainable bathroom products. They reduce waste, they’re more hygenic and they save you money in the long-run.

Bidets are essentially like sinks for your toilet that can help reduce or eliminate toilet paper in the bathroom. While standalone bidets are expensive and require some advanced plumbing work, bidet attachments, like this one from TUSHY, retail at under $100 and can be installed in less than 20 minutes. Check out my full review on the TUSHY Classic Bidet here.

12. Bamboo Toilet Paper or Recycled TP

Conventional toilet paper is responsible for the destruction of a whole lot of trees. Recycled toilet paper can be a great eco-friendly option, though it can contain small amounts of BPA since recycled paper content can include recycled receipts. Bamboo toilet paper is another sustainable (and typically softer) choice, as bamboo grows incredibly quickly. Bamboo TP also uses less water – TUSHY reports that one roll of their Bamboo TP takes 0.59 gallons of water while a roll of conventional TP from virgin paper uses 37 gallons of water.

13. Zero Waste Period Products

Menstrual Cup and Pantyliner Pad - Zero Waste Period Products

There are many options for having a low waste period routine depending on your flow, lifestyle, and preferences. For a full look at the options, check out our Guide to Organic, Sustainable, and Zero Waste Period Products.

My personal favorites: I’ve tried out a few menstrual cups and have liked the cup from Saalt the best so far and when it comes to reusable pads and liners, I’m a big fan of GladRags! I also use period underwear as a menstrual cup backup for heavier flow days.

For me, the menstrual cup has been a lifesaver. I find them to be far more comfortable and convenient — since you can use them for up to 12 hours at a time — than any other options. However, others do not like them at all and prefer reusable pads or period underwear only.

Again, each person has their preferences, and it may take a bit of time to find what the best options are for you!

Check Out Zero Waste Menstrual Products on Green Eco Dream

14. Organic Castile Soap for Cleaning

Castile soap is a concentrated, super versatile cleaner, which makes it the perfect essential to have in your arsenal of sustainable bathroom products. The key lies in the dilution! Here is a quick guide to dilutions from Dr. Bronner’s with 18 different uses for this one wonder ingredient.

Personally, I think Castile soap works better as a cleaning product than as a shampoo or body wash, though, as it can dry out your skin!

While there are many Castile soaps, I suggest Dr. Bronner’s because they use mostly organic and fair trade ingredients, including regenerative organic coconut oil, and package it all up in a post-consumer recycled bottle.

Check Out Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap

15. Homemade Natural Deodorant

DIY Natural Homemade Deodorant - Sustainable Bathroom Guide

Deodorant is another simple DIY to make at home. In fact, this recipe has only 3 ingredients: coconut oil, baking soda or arrowroot powder, and essential oils. I’ve tried a few natural deodorants in the past and none of them worked quite right, so I just decided to make my own! This one works for me and doesn’t irritate my skin. Everyone will have to find the right option for them, but if you want to experiment making your own deodorant, this is an easy recipe to try!

Check Out my Easy Deodorant DIY

16. LastSwab Reusable Cotton Swabs

It’s time to quit those single-use Q-Tips once and for all. LastSwab is the world’s very first reusable, low waste swap for cotton swabs and was build with exceptional quality — one LastSwab is built to last up to 1000 uses!

There is a basic option for everyday needs and a beauty option with a smooth texture and pointed edge perfect for applying and fixing makeup. The cases each LastSwab come in are made from a bio-based plastic as well.

Check Out LastSwab Basic and LastSwab Beauty

17. Reusable Cotton Rounds

Zero Waste Makeup Remover Pads from Last Object

While single-use cotton rounds may be plastic free, cotton is a super water-intensive and often pesticide-ridden crop, so when purchasing cotton, it’s far preferable to choose something reusable and organic!

And these LastObject rounds fit the bill — they are GOTS-certified organic cotton and designed to be used over a thousand times. They also come in a bio-based case.

I personally prefer bars since they are lighter weight and more compact (good for travel and small showers) but you may prefer the convenience of liquid shampoo. The key here is to find what works for you!

1. HiBAR

You’ll find quite a few options for plastic-free shampoo bars and conditioner bars from HiBAR, whether your priority is moisture, volume, soothe, or to maintain hair color or going fragrance-free.

I have this brand’s conditioner and find the shape super convenient to use! I also love that it’s made from natural ingredients and is paraben-, phthalate-, and sulfate-free.

Check Out HiBAR

2. Corvus Botanicals

Palm-free and made from sustainably sourced organic ingredients, Corvus Botanicals’ have zero waste shampoo and conditioner bars healthy for your hair and the planet. And these bars are super concentrated — you can get over 80 washes with them!

Check Out Corvus’ Shampoo + Conditioner

3. Plaine Products

Love the concept of this brand! Essentially, you get your shampoo and/or conditioner in an aluminium bottle, you use up the product, and then send back the bottle to be refilled and reused. I’ve used Plaine Product’s shampoo + conditioner and found it to be really effective and moisturizing for my hair — plus they smelled wonderful!

4. Seed Phytonutrients

Another bottle option is Seed Phytonutrients. You’ll find anti-frizz, color care, and volume options — all made with organic, clean, and vegan ingredients. The exterior of Seed’s packaging is 100% compostable and the interior is recyclable. There’s also a seed packet inside that you can plant afterwards!

Zero Waste Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is one of my hair essentials. I try to go as many days as possible without shampooing but… sometimes I go a day or two too long and need a bit of back-up!

However, a lot of dry shampoo comes in aerosol cans (which are terrible for the environment) and are loaded with harmful chemicals.

5. Lumi Basics

Lumi Basics has dry shampoo in powder form, which is a much safer and environmentally-conscious alternative to most dry shampoos in aerosol cans that can contain butane and propane. (Yikes!!) Their dry shampoo is made with organic ingredients and packaged in a compostable container.

Check Out the Dry Shampoo

6. Lovett Sundries

Another zero waste dry shampoo option when you’re in a pinch is Lovett Sundries. Their dry shampoo comes in a recyclable glass bottle and consists of just two simple ingredients: arrowroot powder and bentonite clay. It also ships in recycled and recyclable plastic-free packaging.

Zero Waste Hair Treatments

If your hair needs a little extra TLC, and you want to try a leave-in treatment or mask, there’s a zero waste swap for that!

7. Seed Moisture Leave-In Treatment

Similar to Seed’s shampoos and conditioners, this ultra-moisturizing leave-in treatment is made from all-natural vegan ingredients and comes in eco-friendly packaging. The recycled paper exterior is compostable and the 80% recycled interior is recyclable.

8. Seed Scalp & Root Mask

This non-toxic scalp and root mask removes hard water minerals, pollutants, and excess buildup from your hair and scalp. But unlike other natural masks that come in plastic containers or even single-use pouches, this one is packaged in a 100% recyclable aluminum tube.

9. Organic Coconut Oil

If you want to keep it really simple, coconut oil is a versatile, moisturizing and frizz minimizing hair treatment. This one from All Good is organic, unrefined and made in a solar powered facility! And, the coconut oil comes in a recyclable and reusable glass jar.

Zero Waste Hair Styling Products

Pastes, pomades, and other styling products are another aspect of hair care that is often filled with questionable ingredients and comes in plastic packaging. These Jack Henry products, though, will give you the style you’re looking for while you work to create a low-waste and non-toxic lifestyle.

10. Jack Henry Hair Paste

Add definition and texture with this low waste, light hold hair paste made from organic natural ingredients. The hair paste is free of parabens, sulfates, SLS & SLES (ingredients banned in the EU, but not in the U.S.), and artificial fragrances. And the glass jar is recyclable and ships in plastic-free packaging.

11. Jack Henry Hair Clay Pomade

For a bit of a longer hold, check out Jack Henry’s Hair Clay Pomade, which is also made from organic plant-based ingredients and packaged in a glass jar. At the end of its life, you can reuse the glass jar as storage or recycle it.

12. Bamboo Hair Brush

Skip the plastic hair brush and choose bamboo instead! This compostable, eco-friendly hair brush is made from bamboo and natural rubber and ships in recycled packaging. I’ve been using a bamboo hair brush for many years and it’s still in fantastic shape, but once its life is done, it is compostable!

13. Kooshoo’s Hair Ties

Most hair ties you’ll find at the store are made from synthetic materials. Thankfully, there is a better alternative! Kooshoo makes their plastic-free hair ties from GOTS- and Fair Trade-certified cotton and Fair Trade-certified natural rubber, so they’re compostable at the end of their life!

Check Out Kooshoo’s Hair Ties

14. Kooshoo’s Scrunchies

If you prefer scrunchies, there’s also a synthetic-free version for that! Similar to the hair ties, these scrunchies are made from organic and fair trade cotton + fair trade natural rubber, and they’re backyard compostable!

With an estimated 1 billion high-density polyethylene laundry detergent containers discarded in the U.S. alone, (and only 30% of them getting recycled, according to the EPA) it’s time to talk about plastic-free and zero waste laundry detergent options as part of a mindful clothing care routine.

Thankfully, there are quite a few brands stepping up to the plate with low-waste detergents made from natural, biodegradable ingredients and packaged in compostable, reusable, and/or recyclable packaging.

This guide will break down options for:

 • Plastic-Free Laundry Detergent Strips
 • Zero Waste Laundry Detergent Pods
 • Zero Waste Laundry Powder
 • Plastic-Free Liquid Laundry Detergent
 • and even a Zero Waste Laundry Soap Bar!

For a completely natural detergent solution, look no further than soap nuts. Made without any added ingredients, soap nuts are simply just dried berries from trees in Nepal that have saponin, an all-natural cleansing agent and fabric softener. Etsy has plenty of sellers with soap nuts, but this one caught our eye thanks to its plastic-free packaging.

Price: $28 for 1/2 pound

Moving towards a low waste or zero waste kitchen can feel overwhelming with so many food products coming in packaging but there are a lot of sustainable swaps we can make even if we don’t have access to a bulk bin store.

We can’t always control what options are available to us at the store, but here are fourteen ideas to help you get started on your low waste kitchen journey at home!

Note that there are partners and affiliates included in this guide. As always, all products meet high standards for sustainability and are brands I love — and that I think you’ll love too!

1. Non-Toxic Cookware

To replace conventional non-stick cookware that contains toxic chemicals like PFAS

black and gold cookware from Caraway for a sustainable kitchen

Cooking at home is a great way to reduce packaging waste and eat healthier — but if you have conventional non-stick pots and pans made with Teflon or other forever chemicals, these harmful chemicals could leach into your food.

Caraway’s non-toxic cookware on the other hand is coated with a natural mineral-based ceramic non-stick coating and regularly shares testing reports performed by SGS. The cookware also ships plastic-free in efficiently designed recycled cardboard boxes. Orders also include a biodegradable (yet durable) cork trivet to protect your counter and kitchen table.

I added Caraway’s cookware to our wedding registry last year because I loved that it was non-toxic, beautifully designed, and versatile — i.e. it’s compatible with all stovetops, gas, induction, or electric. And we have been loving cooking with their cookware. We use it nearly every day! Here’s my full review on Caraway Cookware.

2. The Rounds

To replace groceries & kitchen supplies in single-use packaging

Groceries from The Rounds

Would if you could get the convenience of the delivery and the sustainability of zero waste products in refillable containers? Until now, you likely had to sacrifice convenience to grab your groceries and other kitchen supplies at a zero waste store or you had to sacrifice sustainability to save time on doing grocery delivery. Not anymore with The Rounds.

The Rounds is a two-way last-mile closed loop delivery system that will not only deliver your groceries and household items in refillable packaging and reusable tote bags, but will pick up your empties to clean and refill them too. The service is available in Atlanta, DC, Miami, and Philadelphia currently. But keep your eyes out for their updates to see if they expand to your city soon too!

Check out The Rounds

3. Cloth Rags

To replace paper towels

Zero waste kitchen - cloth rags

Paper towels might be convenient, but they come at a heavy cost — to our environment and on our wallets. As I shared in my Easy Zero Waste Swaps guide, a family of four could easily be spending $650 – $1,000 on paper towels over the course of five years! Every day, over 3,000 tons of paper towel waste is produced in the US alone.

And while estimates vary on the exact environmental impact (this source estimates there are 3,000 tons of paper towel waste in the U.S. and that 17 trees are cut down and 20,000 gallons of water are used per ton of paper towel production), there’s no question this single-use habit is simply unsustainable.

To make this swap, use your existing towels and rags first! If you need some new ones, check out these organic hemp towels ($19.99) and these organic cotton dish towels here ($7.99)

4. Reusable Cloth Napkins

To replace paper napkins

Sustainable kitchen products - reusable cloth napkins

Another single-use paper product that we have to end for the sake of our forests and our wallets? Paper napkins!

Reusable napkins are an easy zero waste kitchen swap to make that will save you from having to buy package after package of single-use paper napkins.

To minimize the environmental impact, consider sourcing linen, hemp, or organic cotton napkins or even better, using fabric you already have to make your own!

Use your existing towels/rags first and check out this guide to DIY-ing your own cloth napkins! If you need new ones, check our these organic cotton cloth napkins ($18)

5. Reusable Silicone Bags

To replace plastic baggies

Zero waste kitchen - silicone bags

Whether you’re using plastic baggies for prepping lunches, storing leftovers, tossing veggies in oil and seasoning, or freezing food, these 100% platinum-grade silicone Stasher bags from EarthHero will be a perfect replacement to reduce waste. Just as functional to use as plastic but safer (no BPA, BPS, phthalates, etc.) and more durable, these silicone bags are safe to bake, cook, microwave, freeze, boil up to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and even put in your sous vide machine. Neat, huh?

I love my Stasher bags — they’re self-sealing, making them as convenient as plastic bags and easy to clean out, too. The color you see above is “Sky”!

Check Out the Stasher Snack Bag ($9.99) | Check Out the Stasher Sandwich Bag ($11.99) | Check Out the 4-Pack of Stasher Bags ($53.99) Use code CONSCIOUSLIFE for 10% off

6. Dish Detergent Pods

To replace conventional dish detergent

Zero waste dish detergent pods

Dropps’ natural dish detergent pods are the solution for getting your dishes clean without all of that plastic packaging or questionable ingredient list that comes along with conventional dish detergent.

I had been hesitant to try dish detergent pods before out of concern they wouldn’t clean as well as powder, but Dropps sent me some of their pods so I could test them out before I shared them with you all — and they work great! You simply put the pod into the slot of your dishwasher you’d typically put any other detergent and after you run your dishwasher, your dishes are clean and the pod has disappeared. (The pod is 100% biodegradable!) The process is super easy and mess-free.

I was also impressed by how minimal Dropps packaging is — the packaging is the container of the pods, making it as minimal as shipping packaging can get while still being protective. (You can see the packaging in the background of the photo on the left!)

Check Out Dropps’ Biodegradeable Detergent Pods ($25 for 64 pods/39 cents per pod for small package; $40 for 120 pods/33 cents per pod for larger package. There is a 30% discount if you do the subscription.)

There are also bulk options available that come out to as little as 16 cents per pod! Use the code ‘life15’ for 15% off your order!

7. Wooden Dish Brush

To replace plastic dish brushes

Sustainable kitchen products - compostable dish brush

There are lots of reasons to love a good wooden dishwashing brush. This plastic-free kitchen swap is just as functional as any other brush, but reduces a whole lot of waste. The brush head is replaceable, so you don’t need to discard the whole brush when the bristles get worn.

Both the handle and the brush head can be composted when they reach their end of life.

Check Out EcoRoot’s Wooden Dish Brush ($11 with $7 replacement brush heads)

8. Dish Washing Soap Bar

To replace dishwashing soap in plastic bottles

Zero waste kitchen - dish washing block

And if you’re scrubbing with an eco brush, might as well use low-waste dishwashing soap as well!

This soap bar is all vegan, palm oil-free, paraben-free, and completely biodegradable. EcoRoots always ships in minimal, plastic-free packaging as well, which I love!

Check Out EcoRoots’ Dish Washing Block

9. Swedish Dish Cloths

To replace synthetic-fiber sponges

Low waste kitchen products - Swedish dish cloths

Swedish dishcloths are super absorbent, making them a great natural alternative to synthetic sponges. EcoRoots has some eco-minded dish clothes made from 70% cellulose, 30% cotton and printed with watercolor-based dyes. They are 100% compostable at the end of their life.

Check Out the Swedish Dish Cloths

10. Glass Jars

To replace single-use storage

Easy zero waste kitchen swaps - glass jars

This is one of my favorite zero-waste kitchen swaps because it reduces waste, costs nothing, and just looks so aesthetically pleasing!

Glass jars are kind of the quintessential zero waste “look” but you don’t need to go out and buy anything new and fancy. If you ever buy something in a jar, just clean it out and re-use it! The photo here features homemade granola in an old sauce jar and some pasta in an old cranberry juice bottle.

11. Sturdy Reusable Containers

To replace single-use bags

Zero waste reusable containers

Food containers are a great way to store leftovers and cut-up produce for later. There are over 40 million tons of food waste each year just in the U.S. or about 30-40% of the U.S. food supply.

The lowest waste option for food storage is to use any containers you’ve already got on hand!

If you do need a new container, check out these stainless steel containers or these glass containers

12. Reusable Beeswax Wrap

To replace single-use plastic wrap

Compostable beeswax wrap

Skip the filmy thin plastic wrap for beeswax wrap from EarthHero that can be used over and over again. This beeswax wrap — which is made from organic cotton and sustainably-harvested beeswax — is perfect to use for any situation you’d typically use tinfoil or cling wrap. I like using it to cover homemade baked goods, leftover food in bowls without lids, or for wrapping around cut produce to keep it fresh.

The beeswax wrap cleans up easily with just water and the wrap can be composted at the end of its useful life.

Check Out the Single Beeswax Wrap ($6.60) | Shop the 3-Pack of Beeswax Wraps ($17.99 – $19.99) Use code CONSCIOUSLIFE for 10% off

13. Cloth Produce Bags

To replace single-use bags

Low waste kitchen - cloth produce bags

Store your produce away safely with reusable cloth bags! Cloth reusable bags can also be used at grocery stores to eliminate single-use plastic produce bags. (At the time of writing, many stores are not allowing reusable bags due to COVID-19, but I do think that we will be able to bring in our own reusable bags again.)

Don’t have bags? Check Out These Organic Cotton Produce Bags

14. At-Home Water Filter

To replace plastic water bottles

I love Soma’s water filter! I’m not a picky water-drinker (I honestly don’t notice much of a difference from spring water from a bottle to tap water from the sink), but I do feel much better knowing that chlorine, mercury, zinc, cadmium, and copper, are filtered through this Soma water filter.

Soma’s filters are made from 60% plant-based and renewable materials and the company is B-Corp certified.

Check Out the Soma Water Filter

15. Tea Steeper + Loose-leaf Tea

To replace individually-wrapped tea bags

Zero waste tea - tea steeper

If you love tea but don’t love all that packaging, there’s an easy swap for that: loose-leaf tea + tea steepers. Not only will you reduce your exposure to microplastics by skipping the plastic teabag, but I find that loose-leaf tea often tastes so much better too. Lately, I’ve been loving the Sacred Blossom Farm teas that were kindly gifted to me!

For a full guide to loose0leaf tea (and tea packed in natural, compostable bags), check out my guide to sustainable and fair trade tea.

Check Out Sacred Blossom Farm’s Tea Strainer

16. French Press or Reusable Coffee Filters

Instead of single-use filters with filter coffee

There are a few ways to go about zero waste coffee making. One is to use a french press! With a french press, all you need is the coffee and some boiling water — no single-use paper filter needed.

If you do prefer filtered coffee for taste or time constraints, try a reusable coffee filter, like these from EarthHero.

The post 15 Best Eco-Friendly Journal Brands For Your Sustainable Self-Care Practice appeared first on Conscious Life & Style.

]]>
Journaling is a mindful self-care activity that’s fun and good for our mental health. Having a regular journaling practice helps decrease stress, reduce our screen time, and boosts creativity. However, traditional journals and notebooks aren’t always the most sustainable products. Journals are made from paper, and typically not reusable, so if you’re an avid journaler this waste can add up. Thankfully, there are numerous eco-friendly journals to choose from to minimize your impact.

In this article, we’ll break down what eco journals are, what to look for before buying, and the best eco-friendly notebooks to choose from.

What Are Eco-Friendly Journals?

Eco-friendly journals are any journals that are made from sustainable materials and produced in an environmentally conscious way. Traditional journals are made from paper but paper production is a largely wasteful practice that contributes to water pollution and deforestation.

Choosing eco-friendly journals is a great way to combat this. Eco notebooks are made from upcycled and recycled paper or natural tree-free paper.

What Should You Look For From Sustainable Notebooks?

Notebooks can be made from a variety of sustainable materials, and produced in various ways, to be considered eco-friendly. If you’re trying to figure out if that notebook you love is indeed eco-friendly, look for one or more of the following:

 • Recycled Paper
 • Tree-free paper made from stone, hemp, or other natural materials
 • Plastic-free
 • Biodegradable/compostable
 • Plant-based Ink
 • Handmade/Artisan made
 • FSC Certified

Where to Buy Eco-Friendly Journals:

Eco-friendly journals are more common than ever, which makes it easy to find them at any retailer that sells journals. Try to prioritize supporting sustainable businesses, however, to ensure that both the materials and production process used are eco-friendly.

You can also look for handmade options from independent artisans such as on Etsy or in local stores or markets.

Below you’ll find our 15 favorite places to buy eco-friendly journals! Note that the following includes some affiliate links. As always, we only share brands that meet strict criteria for sustainability we love — and that we think you’ll love too.

For many of us, gift-giving is a wonderful way to show we care and connect with our loved ones. Maybe you’re already an expert at finding sustainably made gifts, but you might not know what eco-friendly gift-wrapping methods are available. Thankfully, you’ve come to the right place.

Below, we’ll cover the top zero waste gift wrapping options for you to use so you can easily give gifts more sustainably.

What is Zero Waste Gift Wrapping?

True to the name, zero waste gift wrapping is a wrapping method that doesn’t contribute to additional waste. This could look like:

 • Reusing old gift boxes,
 • Choosing recycled and compostable wrapping paper,
 • Or making the wrapping part of the gift such as baskets, hat boxes, or tote bags.

Whichever method you choose for zero waste gift wrapping should ideally be plastic-free, reusable, and recyclable and/or compostable to be considered “zero waste”.

Why is it Important to Choose No-Waste Wrapping?

Traditional wrapping paper and disposal gift boxes are single-use items that essentially generate unnecessary waste. Though wrapping paper is usually made of paper, it often can’t be recycled because it’s made from mixed materials and typically has leftover adhesive or other non-recyclable elements.

Any single-use item that can be replaced by an eco-friendly alternative is a great way to minimize our environmental impact, and gift wrapping is no exception. A little wrapping paper may seem harmless, but it adds up.

If Americans chose to wrap three of their gifts in previously used materials during the holiday season, it would save as much paper as 45,000 football fields. That’s a significant amount of waste that could be prevented by using eco-friendly gift wraps.

If you receive gifts already wrapped, try to save the materials for later use. When it comes to wrapping your presents, browse the ideas below as your low-waste gift-wrapping guide to take you through the holidays (and the year) more sustainably.

8 Eco-Friendly Present Wrapping Ideas

Note: we feature brands and products that meet strict standards for sustainability we love, that we think you’ll love too. Some of these links are affiliate links, meaning we’ll earn a commission should you choose to buy through these links, which helps us continue to create these resources!

1. Recycled Wrapping Paper

If you want to use wrapping paper, first opt for wrapping paper that can be recycled. Second, try to choose wrapping paper that is made from recycled materials, and/or is biodegradable. As a rule of thumb, any wrapping paper that’s plain (no glitter, foil, metallic, plastic, etc) and made from only paper, can typically be recycled.

If you want to purchase sustainably made wrapping paper, check out Wrappily for wrapping paper that’s made from recycled paper and is recyclable. Wrappily also has natural fiber ribbons and recycled gift tags.

2. Tote Bags

Tote bags make wonderful multi-purpose zero waste gift bags. When picking out a tote bag, try to choose one that’s sustainably made from 100% organic cotton or recycled materials. Tote bags are wonderful zero waste gift wrap ideas since they are a gift within a gift and your loved one can reuse them often.

3. Fabric Wrapping (Like Scarves)

Another fantastic zero waste “wrapping paper” option is to use fabric, like old scarves. Scarves make beautiful and timeless gift wrapping paper. You can upcycle fabric scraps or use clothing, like a t-shirt, for another no-waste wrapping paper idea. (Here are 4 fabric wrap techniques to try!)

More fabric-based gift wrap ideas could be reusable napkins, towels, beach blankets, or tablecloths. You can even buy reusable fabric wrapping from a variety of sustainable brands, such as The Little Market and Christy Dawn

4. Upcycled Items

Not all zero waste gift wrap requires you to buy something new. An easy (and very sustainable!) way to wrap gifts is by upcycling items you already have. This might mean reusing last year’s wrapping paper or gift bags and boxes. It could also mean upcycling old magazines or newspapers to create your wrapping paper.

Get creative! Chances are something is lying around your house that can be repurposed as gift wrap.

5. Secondhand Wrapping Paper

Guess what? You can buy wrapping paper secondhand. One of the most sustainable things to do is to use what’s already made. So if you don’t have leftover wrapping paper, and your loved ones don’t either, you can look for secondhand wrapping paper at your local thrift store.

You can also find secondhand wrapping paper from online sellers such as Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Poshmark.

6. Reused Grocery Bags

No matter how hard we try to bring our reusable grocery bags to the store, chances are we’ve forgotten a few times. Most of us have a collection of old paper grocery bags (or bags from other stores) lying around the house. One of the easiest eco-friendly present-wrapping ideas is to reuse those old bags as gift wrap.

You can either use the bag as is to make a low-waste gift bag or cut it up to repurpose it as wrapping paper. If you’re not a fan of the color or the label, get crafty and paint the bags using eco-friendly paints.

7. DIY Wrapping

Making your own gift wrap is a fun thing to do with friends or the children in your life. This is a nice way to upcycle old materials like cereal boxes, cardboard, plastic bags, or worn clothing items to create beautiful reusable wrapping paper.

Get your scissors, paints, and glue, and see what you can design. If you’re not sure where to start, you can find video or written tutorials to transform pretty much any old object into wrapping paper, gift boxes, gift bags, tags, or cards.

8. Gift Wrap Presents

Last but not least, choose reusable items to use as gift wrap. Hat, storage, or jewelry boxes all make wonderful zero-waste gift boxes. Decorative items like wicker baskets, trunks, or purses, can all double as a gift bag and a thoughtful gift.

Mugs or cups can be used to wrap smaller items while clothing staples can be used as fabric gift wrap. Think of items that can double as a gift and gift wrap. (Bonus if you can find these items secondhand!)

Bonus Tip: Skip Tape and Plastic Decor

Regardless of what materials you end up using for wrapping paper, try to forgo tape. The tape can prevent recyclable items from being recycled. It can also damage delicate materials like paper, making them harder to reuse.

Instead opt for a string to tie your presents up. You could even use cloth or felt belts, or headbands and jewelry (if it won’t get damaged) for smaller gifts.

Lastly plastic decor like bows might look pretty, but chances are it’s going to generate additional waste. Look for natural decor — like branches, holly, or pinecones — if you want to add a seasonal embellishment to your gifts.

‘Tis the season for festive parties, gift-giving, and decking out your home in holiday decor. The holiday season is beloved by many but it also happens to be one of the most wasteful times of year.

Holiday decor can be a significant contributing factor to this, often made from disposable materials and sometimes not reused, or used for just a few seasons. If you’re interested in a more eco-friendly holiday season, then choosing sustainable Christmas decor can be a step in the right direction.

Why are Sustainable Holiday Decorations Important?

The holiday season is the most wasteful time of year primarily due to overconsumption. The average American accumulates 25% more trash between Thanksgiving and New Year. From food waste to single-use items to holiday decor, a significant amount of mostly preventable waste is generated during the holiday season.

Holiday decorations add to this, as many brands churn out trinkets and items made from plastic and other cheap materials. And these are often produced in unethical factories that involve worker exploitation.

While holiday decorations are what make this time of year so festive, there are sustainable options that we can choose instead. Sustainable holiday decor typically involves buying items that are either reusable or compostable and recyclable.

It also means supporting sustainable and/or local businesses with your purchases. This way we’re preventing the accumulation of additional waste, cutting down on plastic consumption, and avoid supporting unsustainable and unethical brands.

What to Look for From Sustainable Christmas Decor:

Sustainable Christmas decorations can look like choosing wrapping paper made from recycled paper or using reusable items like tote bags and scarves instead. It can mean purchasing a locally grown Christmas tree from a family-run farm and properly composting it. Sustainable holiday decor can also look like making ornaments at home from natural materials and reusing them for years to come.

When it comes to determining if your holiday decorations are sustainable, use the following as a checklist before purchasing or making your own:

Wooden christmas ornaments

Reusable

Ideally, eco-friendly Christmas decorations will be reusable for years to come. To prevent additional waste, decor should be meant to last. If it’s a single-use or short-term item, it should be recyclable and compostable at the end of its life.

Plastic-free

Holiday decor should be plastic-free when possible to lessen its harmful environmental impact. If plastic is used, look for items made from recycled plastic that can be recycled.

Made Responsibly

Support brands that are transparent about the sustainable practices and materials used to create their decor. This could mean fair trade and artisan-made goods created from natural materials.

Eco-Conscious Materials

Look for holiday decor made from eco-friendly materials. Decor can easily be made from upcycled or recycled items as well as natural materials like linen, fabric, or foraged branches.

Where to Find Sustainable Christmas & Holiday Decor:

When choosing sustainable holiday decorations, there are three main options. You can either create your own, purchase secondhand goods, or buy new ones from responsible brands.

DIY: How to Make Eco-friendly Holiday Decorations

Did you know that a significant amount of holiday decor can easily be made at home? It’s a great excuse to use up excess items you may have laying around as well as a wonderful way to spend time with your loved ones.

Plus, making your own Christmas decorations will most likely save you money.

When it comes to making your decorations, first take inventory of what holiday decorations you’re missing.

DIY Dried Citrus Wreath

Then, find instructions online or on Pinterest to make it at home and see what items you already have. Head to your local craft store to pick up the remainder of the materials.

Try to focus on natural and plastic-free materials when possible. You can often make these items using natural goods like dried fruit, recycled items like paper scraps, or natural materials like foliage.

Opting to make decorations that can be reused for years to come will also keep your DIY decor more eco-minded.

Some particularly easy DIY holiday decorations include ornaments, sustainable wreaths, garlands, stockings, advent calendars, or other decorative edible items (i.e. gingerbread houses).

If you’re not that crafty, opt for natural and seasonal items that double as decorations such as pinecones, branches, holly, cinnamon sticks, or oranges.

Used: Secondhand Stores for Sustainable Christmas Decor

If making your own holiday decorations isn’t in the cards, buying secondhand decor is an easy sustainable alternative. You can find used Christmas decorations from a variety of sellers, but the following options may be the most helpful:

Thrift Stores/Secondhand Shops

Local secondhand stores are a wonderful place to find holiday decor at an affordable price. You may even come across rare or vintage items that can be passed down for generations.

Check your local used or secondhand store, Goodwill, thrift or vintage stores, and even consignment shops for holiday decorations.

Online Sellers

If you can’t find used Christmas decorations locally, you can probably find what you need online. Numerous online retailers sell a variety of holiday decor.

Some of our favorite secondhand retailers include eBay, Poshmark, OfferUp, and your local Facebook Marketplace.

New: Sustainable Shops for Holiday Season Decor

Making your own holiday decor or purchasing secondhand is generally the most sustainable option. However, that’s not always possible. Sometimes you have to buy new to find what you need. When it comes to buying eco-friendly holiday decor, choose to support local, sustainable retailers or shop from any of the online retailers below:

Where to Find Sustainable Christmas Trees:

Woman looking at Sustainable
Christmas Trees

The Christmas tree is the center of holiday decor. As such, it’s important to choose a sustainable Christmas tree if you’re interested in lowering your impact during the holidays.

You have a few options when it comes to getting an eco-friendly Christmas tree:

Buy a Real Christmas Tree

Even though a real Christmas tree will only last for one season, this can still be a sustainable option. Buy your tree from a local, family-run tree farm and properly dispose of it at the end of the season. Many cities have tree take-back programs or your tree farm may provide a recycling option.

Rent A Tree

Alternatively, depending on where you live, there are several local companies that now offer the option to rent a potted Christmas tree.

They’ll deliver it to your door and pick it up when you’re done, replanting it afterward. This is a great option if you don’t have any local tree farms nearby or you’re short on time or transportation.

Choose a Reusable Artificial Tree

Artificial trees are often largely unsustainable. Most artificial trees are made in unethical factories from plastic. If you’re going to purchase an artificial tree, look for secondhand options and consider it a lifetime investment to make your purchase more sustainable.

Even better, choose reusable trees that aren’t made from plastic. They may not look like your typical Christmas tree, but there are wooden Christmas trees available that have the same signature shape and can be decorated with your favorite fair trade ornaments and lights. Bonus if you can find one made from FSC-certified or reclaimed wood.

Whether it’s giving season or you simply want to get a loved one something special, giving gifts is a regular part of our lives. If you’re on a sustainability journey, however, you may know that gift-giving isn’t always sustainable. Many of us give things that aren’t needed or aren’t sustainably made. One way to make gift-giving a bit more sustainable is to choose secondhand gifts.

In this guide, we’ll cover 21 secondhand gift ideas that make it easy to give more thoughtfully this year.

Why You Should Choose Secondhand Gifts

Choosing preloved gifts is one of the most sustainable ways to shop. New items — even if it’s a more eco-friendly item, still has an impact.

Meanwhile there are plenty of wonderful used items that need a home. While many of us donate the things we no longer need, this doesn’t necessarily mean anyone is buying them — they can still end up in a landfill somewhere.

Choosing secondhand gifts can help reduce current waste while also minimizing the need for additional production (and the associated resource use and impact). It’s also a fantastic way to find unique, one-of-a-kind items and to get vintage pieces from big brands that you may not want to buy, or afford to buy from, otherwise

Where to Find Secondhand Gifts

In addition to checking out your local vintage or thrift shop, there are now a wide variety of online retailers to find secondhand gifts.

Some great places to find preloved gifts include:

“If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.” These iconic words from the famous graduation speech column turned ’90s inspirational anthem rings true even today.

Sunscreens not only shield you from harmful UV radiation but also slow down visible signs of aging. A must-have in your beauty and wellness arsenal, we found 10 zero waste sunscreens that help the environment and your skin too!

Why Choose a Waste Free Sunscreen?

As we head into the sunny months of summer, finding a non-greasy, no-white cast sunscreen with at least 30 SPF coverage might be your biggest clean beauty priority — and rightfully so! But adding a low waste and plastic-free sunscreen pre-requisite into your checklist might just go a long way in shielding the planet as well.

The beauty industry produces an estimated 120 billion units of plastic packaging on an annual basis, most of which are not widely recyclable. A large quantity of that plastic packaging usually ends up in landfills where they can take up to 500 years to decompose, and will most likely leach pollutants into the soil and water.

Sustainable alternatives include packaging made of aluminum, glass and paper are endlessly recyclable.

What About the Chemicals in Sunscreen?

Sunscreens are one of those hard-at-work products that are expected to protect you from UVA and UVB rays, and have an ultra-light texture that should also be sweat and water-resistant, among many other such required features.

So it’s only natural that your go-to sunscreen is made with formulations that meet those essential requirements. But some of the ingredients in these formulations have proven to be problematic for the environment.

In 2021, the state of Hawaii passed a law that banned the sale or distribution of any sunscreen that contains the chemicals oxybenzone or octinoxate without a prescription. The primary goal of this legislation is to preserve coral ecosystems that marine scientists claim are damaged by the aforementioned chemicals present in sunscreens.

Every year, 14,000 tons of sunscreen are thought to wash into the oceans that have caused the most damage like coral bleaching in popular reef areas in Hawaii and the Caribbean.

The environmental speculation around this has led to the launch of several reef-safe sunscreens and mineral sunscreens which contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that have been generally recognized as safe and effective by the FDA.

Are Mineral Sunscreens Better Than Chemical Sunscreens?

Mineral sunscreens are primarily made up of two active ingredients, titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, that work to create a physical shield on top of the skin to reflect ultraviolet rays. Also known as physical sunscreens, mineral iterations often take a while to be blended in during application and can leave a bit of a white cast. While chemical sunscreens go on easy and have a much-preferred sheer to barely-there appearance after application.

However, if you’re planning on taking a dip in the ocean, a mineral sunscreen might be your best bet, since the coral-bleaching agents are usually found in chemical versions.

That being said, experts often argue that any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen. And we’d like to extend that advice to say that the best sunscreen is the one that shields you from the sun and protects the environment from plastic waste as well.

Expert tip: A minimum SPF rating of at least 30 (SPF 50 being ideal!) is essential for daily protection. In addition to which, you should also watch out for words like ‘PA++’ (more pluses equal higher protection) or ‘broad spectrum’ on the packaging, both of which indicate that you’ll be protected from burns and aging, i.e. UVB and UVA rays.

Eager to discover efficient yet eco-friendly plastic-free sunscreens? Below, find 10 zero-waste SPF options that’ll shield your skin all summer long (and beyond).
